Princess Pearl, P.O.W.E.R. Girl, Book Two - Ch. 5 - From Trauma to Triumph

10/10/2021 / Short Stories

"Xi! Glad you're here! What's happened?" Pearl ran over and hugged her.
"Long story," Xi said, sniffing. The lights in the waterfall shone on her tears. "Guess it's a real trick this time!" She quickly brushed tears from her eyes. "I walked home from school, ‘cause I needed to change for work, and there were more motorcycles and strange people over, having a keg party--it was on the porch! I could smell weed. The music was blasting--and my stuff was scattered in the yard!"
     Pearl was shocked. "What? Why?"
Xi took a deep breath, and sighed. "I don't know---I wanna cuss right now, but I know you don't do that!"
LORD, what should I do? Pearl prayed in her heart. "Well," she said, "I'm so glad you came Xi, and here--let's go get you a burger and fries and a drink, and--"
"Nah, if I eat right now, I'll throw up!" Xi said. "Joe gave me a candy bar--"
     "Oh, you went to work?"
"I had to. But I was so freaked out I couldn't concentrate, and he told me to leave." She heaved a deep sigh. "I just started walking, then I heard the music and remembered you'd invited me." She leaned her head down by her knees. "So I followed the music and saw this gorgeous waterfall and the bench. I've been sitting here, just trying to chill. But I can't stop crying, blast it all!" More tears rolled down her face.
"God is always working, and He loves you!" said Pearl, patting her friend on the shoulder.
"Yeah....well, this is pretty rough, the way He's working!" Xi said.
"No, Xi, He didn't cause this--"
"Right," Xi said sarcastically. "Whatever. Somebody's got it in for me!" She sighed deeply. "I just wanna lie down and sleep for a month!"
Pearl hugged her. What do I say, LORD? Please give her peace!

"I'm gonna get you sweaty," Xi said. "But you're sweet."
"Do you want a drink?" Pearl asked.
"Sure. Whatever," Xi said, and leaned way over. "I think I'm gonna throw up anyway!"
      She did.
"Oh, Xi, let me get you a wet cloth--"
"What's going on?" her mother said, walking up. "Who is this? Bless your heart." She returned in a few seconds, and gave her tissues to wipe her mouth.
      "Thanks..." said Xi.
"Queen Mother," said Pearl, "this is my friend Xi. We met her at the corner store with Ms. Risa when we got candy for the outreach--"
"Hi Xi," her mother interuppted. "Why is your stuff scattered on the ground?"
      "Uh, well--"
"Queen Mother, it's sad!" Pearl said. "Her mom was drunk--"
"More like stoned!" Xi said harshly. “Or both! I’m not sure!”                             "Anyway, she needs a place to stay," said Pearl. "Can she stay with us?"
Her mother just stared at them and the stuff on the ground for a few seconds. "Xi, I’m so sorry to hear this. I'll go talk to Burt. You girls stay here, and I'll be right back."
"Who's Burt?" asked Xi, wiping her face again. "Yuck! I guess I do need a drink, to get this outta my mouth. And why did you call me your friend? You don't really know me. If you did, you probably wouldn't--Your mom sure wouldn't!" More tears streamed down her face, and she wiped them away quickly.
"Xi, God loves you, and He's gonna work all this out, somehow. He is always working!" Pearl remembered her prize. "Just a bit. Be right back!" She zipped around the waterfall and got her fish. She picked up the little bowl and walked back to Xi. “This is for you!" she said, putting the fish in her hands.
"What?" Xi said, almost scowling. "I don't even have a place to go, and you're giving me a fish?"
Pearl laughed. "It may seem silly, but he’s yours! God sent him."
“This is crazy! What for?" Xi held up the bowl in the light of the falls. The fish swam serenely, its lovely tail flowing.
"To remind you that, just like this little fish, you may not be able to give God anything back, but He loves you, and will always take care of you."
Xi didn't say anything. She just held the bowl in her lap, and looked down at it.
LORD, thank You that You’re touching her! Pearl thought."You'll like my mom and uncle. Really."
Xi shrugged, and Pearl heard her mother and uncle talking. They walked around the falls, but Xi didn’t look up.
"Hello, little one," said Burt in a gentle voice. "I hear you've had some challenges today."
Xi looked at him, and burst into tears again. Pearl and her mother sat down on either side and hugged her. Burt gave her a cold bottle of water, and Xi sighed and took a big drink.
"Can we pray for you, Sweetie?" said Burt.
She nodded, and he and Pearl and her mother put their hands on Xi's shoulders and quietly prayed for her.
      "Thanks," Xi whispered.
Burt bent down and said to Xi, "Darlin, we'd like you to stay with us tonight, OK? We have comfy twin beds in Pearl's room, and after you get a good night's sleep, I'll make a big breakfast--"
"Yeah!" said Pearl, excited. "Uncle Burt's a great cook! And we can help you start straightening out some things. Sound good?"
"I don't know," Xi said. "My life's such a mess!"
"Precious, God is always working, and somehow, He is going to make things all right."
"Queen Mother's right," said Pearl. "He always does. And like she says, He can use a rest and food to help us feel and think better, too!"
Her mother nodded. “It’s so refreshing when I hear you say what I’ve taught you, Pearl!” She said, and smiled a bit.
Pearl smiled back, then said, "Xi, I'm so glad we met!"
      "Yeah, me too," Xi said.
Pearl started picking up Xi's clothes. "Queen Mother, do we have anything to put her clothes in?"
      "Yes, under the table."
Pearl returned with a couple of plastic bags, and starting stuffing Xi's clothes in them. Xi opened her backpack and tried to stuff a shirt into it.               "Stupid bag's too full!" she said.
"We have so many good things," Pearl said. "Many people don't even have clothes."
"Or a mother!" Xi said, sounding angry.
"Thank goodness, we have a Father God Who loves us and always takes care of us, no matter what," Pearl's Mother said, as she helped them.
"Yes, He loves us so much!" said Burt. "Ladies, I'm going to help the pastors and the others start wrapping things up. I'll bring Robert, so you girls can go on home, and Xi can clean up. I'll bring leftover burgers and see you in a couple hours."
He looked at Xi. "Girl, hold your head up," he told her, as he started walking away. "What the enemy has meant for evil, God will work for good!"
Pearl beamed. "Amen, Uncle Burt! That's Genesis 50:20, right?"
"Right!" he said, from the other side of the waterfall.
"Okay, Xi, is that everything?" said Pearl's mother.
"All but my heart, haha!" Xi said, trying to make a joke.
"God loves you and so do we!" said Pearl.
Xi held the fish bowl close to her face. "Someone does--or I'd be like a fish outta water!"
