Princess Pearl, P.O.W.E.R. Girl, Book Two - Ch. 8 - Waffles and the Word

"Uncle Burt makes great waffles!" said Pearl, as they walked down the stairs. "Vivace, sit, before we step on you!" Her pet was running up and down the steps in front of them.
They waved at Burt as they walked into the kitchen. He took his ear buds out, and said, "Mornin’ ladies. I trust you slept well."
"Yes, and Xi was up before me!" said Pearl. "Where's Queen Mother?"
"Checking on Robert. If he's still dreaming, we'll let him sleep."
Yay! Thank You, God! Pearl thought. Now we can have a good, quiet breakfast. Besides, he hasn't even met Xi yet.
Pearl pointed to a big open book on the table. "Uncle Burt gets up really early and reads his Bible first thing. Isn't that cool?" She smiled at her uncle. Uncle Burt is more of Jesus in action!
"Let's see where he's reading," Pearl said, as she walked over to look. "Oh yeah--John.” Pearl put her finger on the verse.

"Queen Mother says John's a great book to start with, especially this: ‘But to as many as did receive and welcome Him, He gave the authority--power, privilege, right-- to become the children of God, that is, to those who believe in--adhere to, trust in, and rely on--His name—Who owe their birth neither to bloods nor to the will of the flesh--that of physical impulse--nor to the will of man--that of a natural father--, but to God. They are born of God!’ That's John 1:12-13, the Amplified Classic."

"The amp what?" Xi said. "The only amps I know of are at rock concerts. And that's an awful lot of words. I don't even know some of them!"
Pearl giggled. "No worries. It's one of the best ones, Queen Mother said. It has extra words to help us understand it."
"Why?” Xi said. “I thought there was only one real Bible, and why would ya need more words?"
     "Well--"
"Darlin' that’s a good question," said Burt, as he put more waffles in the pan. "You ladies come eat, and we'll bless the food. Charlotte and Rob will be down later."
The girls sat down, and Burt put a high pile of waffles on the table, then poured melted butter on them. Yum! thought Pearl. Thank You, LORD, for your sweet Word--and waffles too!
Pearl felt the dog nudge her feet. “Vivace, sit!" said Pearl. "I'll give you some bacon in a bit."
"Let's bow our heads," Burt said, sitting down. "LORD, we thank You for Your good Word, the Bread of Life. We also thank You for this good day, and this tasty breakfast. We thank You for all good things--including Miss Xiomara."
Pearl peeped at her new friend. Xi was staring at Burt. He continued. "Please cause this food to nourish our bodies, and help us to walk in Your ways. We thank You for it, in Jesus' Name, amen!"
"Amen!" said Pearl's mother, as she came in. "Rob's sleeping, so I'll join you guys.”
"Now dig in," said Burt, “and we can talk about Bibles."
Pearl smiled at Queen Mother, then said in a loud, teasing voice, "We have honey, but I like syrup on pancakes."
"There's hope that you'll come to the right side soon, Pearl!" her mother replied, and smiled back.
"Honey?" said Xi. "I think my mom calls it 'bee spit,' or something."
Burt laughed. "Now that's quite a description! But the LORD says to eat honey, for it is good, and He compares it to wisdom in the Bible. Wisdom is something we need every day, for sure!"
"Uncle Burt, are you going to have honeybees for the gardens we plant in the spring?" said Pearl.
"Maybe," he said. "I'll check on that in December, ‘cause we'll need to order the bees in January."
"You have to order bees?" Pearl said. "You mean on the computer?"
"We'll there's a chance they may come around, but if you want to establish a hive on purpose, it's best to order them from a licensed dealer," he said.
"Don't those things sting you?" said Xi, reaching for more pancakes. "I think I'm allergic."
Burt said, "I hope not, Darlin'. Anyway, I don't know that I want to get into honey. I think we'll start with Mason bees. They are much more gentle, and usually don't sting. They don't make honey, but they pollinate a lot more flowers than honeybees!" He nodded. "Yep, we'll start with them."

He reached for waffles. "Now, let's talk about the Bible. Many people have translated it from the original Hebrew and Greek through the years. Some are literal translations, and some are paraphrases."
Xi looked confused. "Para-whats? All I know is parasites." She took another big bite of waffles. "Is that a bug?"
Burt laughed, but it was kind. "Sweetie, God will use whatever He can to reach people. He's always creating, and that's the main reason there are so many versions. Paraphrases are when the translator puts things into his or her own words—like The Message Bible. But God can talk to you through any version. He knows exactly what will reach each of us."
     Xi nodded and kept chewing.
He chuckled. "No worries. Whatever Bible you read, He'll speak to you, if you really want to hear Him!" He turned to Pearl. "Let's drive to Pinson this afternoon and let Xi pick out a new Bible."
"Yeah! And let's take Robin and Lucas and Ms. Risa, then all eat at Braum's, okay?" Pearl giggled. "It can be part of our reward for handing out tracts and stuff."
"OK, Precious, we'll go this afternoon. I'll call Risa when we get done with breakfast. She's usually flexible on Saturdays." Burt turned to Xi. "Is that good for you, Sweetie?"
"Sure," she said, "are they friends of yours?" She took a drink of milk, then looked surprised and peered into her glass.
"Oh, that's organic whole milk," Pearl said. "That's why it tastes different. Sorry, I forgot to tell you. Almost everything we eat is organic and non-GMO."
"Okay....I don't know much about that, but thanks," Xi said.
"It's healthier for you," Pearl added. "Really."
"Right," said Xi, but sounded unconvinced. "Is all of this organic?" Xi said.
"Yes," said Burt. "But it all tastes good, right?"
      Xi nodded. "Yeah. Thanks."
"By the way, Risa is a good friend of mine," Burt said. "She is a teacher at GraceLight Academy and also teaches kids at church. Her daughter is Robin and her son is Lucas."
"Robin's my age, and Lucas is a little younger," said Pearl. "We really like 'em. Maybe you and me and Robin can do a trail ride soon!"
     "What's GraceLight Academy?" said Xi.
"It's the Christian school here," said Pearl. Oooh! I really want to ask Queen Mother about us going!

They heard Robert's voice. "I smell breakfast!"
Thank You, LORD, at least we got started before he came! Pearl thought. She got more eggs and didn't say anything.
Robert ran into the kitchen and looked at Xi. "Hey, you're new!" he said and waved, then turned to his uncle. "Where are my waffles?"
"Here, Bub," said Burt. "Come sit with me."
Help me be nice, LORD, Pearl thought. "Rob, we're going to Pinson later to get Xi a Bible," she said, "and then ice cream!"
"Yay!" said Robert! "I want a chocolate!"
"Sure," said their mother, sounding a bit tired. "We'll get you all some new clothes, too."
"New clothes?" Xi said. "You don't have to do that!"
"All you kids need some,” said Pearl’s mother. “I don’t mind you wearing my robe--“

“It’s so warm!” said Xi, touching it as she ate.
“But robes are not allowed in homeschool—for the students nor the teacher. Sorry!” She smiled. “It’s God Who provides good things, anyway. We're just channels! He loves us, and He’s very generous. I’m sure we can find you a few outfits, and a robe for you, Xi. Or PJs, if you prefer.”

“Thanks!” Xi said, and took another bite. "Queen Mother, we also need food for Xi's fish."
"Sure thing, Precious. Thanks for remembering."
Pearl smiled at Xi, who smiled back, then asked for seconds on the waffles.

God, You're so good--all the time, Pearl thought.  Thank You, LORD, You're helping us remember that!
