Princess Pearl, P.O.W.E.R. Girl, Book Two - Ch. 9 - Lifting Up the Name of Jesus

by Tonja Taylor
10/11/2021 / Short Stories

"OK, guys, make sure your seatbelts are on!" said Risa, putting on her shades and starting the engine. She turned on the radio to their favorite Christian station.
"I'm glad your mom has a Suburban, so we can all go together!" said Pearl. I’m glad Robert’s in the back, too! she thought.
"Yeah!" said Robin. "He led her to get a big car ‘cause He knew we'd be friends and do stuff!"
"Thank you for taking us, Risa," said Pearl's mother.
"My pleasure," said Risa. "God provides!"
Xi sat beside Pearl. She was looking at her phone and using her ear buds while wearing dark shades.
"Hey Xi," Pearl said loudly, "when we get back, we can take you to look at the horses, and maybe Uncle Burt will let us ride!"
"I don't ride animals," Xi said quietly, not moving.
"What are you listening to?" said Pearl.
"Pop music--rock really. You probably wouldn't know the band.”
"No, wait. I do like rock music!" said Pearl. She giggled, then turned and grinned at Robin.
Xi's eyebrows went up over her shades, and she turned toward Pearl.

     "Really?"
"Yes!" said Pearl. "The music of The Rock--Jesus Christ! Like on the radio! It helps me think on good things."
Xi sighed and shook her head. "Pearl girl, you are something else!"
Pearl smiled. "You mean Princess Pearl! I never told you that, did I? It's Princess Ariel Dominique Walker, right Queen Mother?"
Her mother turned to look back at them, and nodded. "Yes, in Hebrew, Ariel means 'lioness of God,' and Dominique means 'belonging to God.'"
"Cool," said Xi. "So you are a lioness belonging to God."
     "Something like that!" said Pearl.
"Xi," said Risa, as she drove, your name is Spanish, and means 'ready for battle.' Did you know that?"
Xi snorted. "No, but I believe it. No wonder!" She sighed.

Pearl's gaze met her mother's in the rear-view mirror. She saw her mother praying quietly in the Spirit, and knew that God was working all things together. Genesis 50:20 for Xi, Jesus! Help us talk about positives, like Queen Mother says! Pearl gently touched Xi's arm. "Hey Xi, let's guess your favorite ice cream!"
"Knock yourself out," Xi said, not moving.
Is that a tear I see? Pearl wondered. "OK, tutti fruiti, right?" Pearl acted excited, and shot Robin a look, like, Let's help her cheer up!
"Can't stand the stuff!" said Xi.
"Oh, of course--mint pistachio!" said Robin.
"No way!" said Xi, shaking her head. "You guys are really off!"
"Oh, I know!" said Pearl. "It's plain vanilla, of course--but with peanut M&Ms mixed in!"
"Hmph," Xi said, with a hint of a smile. "You're getting warmer at least, but I like my M&Ms sans nuts!"
     "Sandy nuts?" said Pearl, teasing.
Xi said, "Princess, you know 'sans' means ‘without,’ so no nuts for me!"
"Don't you like pecans and almonds?" Robin asked. "They add protein, and they're good."
"Nope. I think I'm allergic. Wrong again."
“I guess you’re allergic to Pearl, then, ‘cause she’s a nut!” said Robin, and laughed.
“You have a point!” Xi said, and laughed too.
Pearl grinned. Now we’re getting somewhere!
"Mama, turn up the radio!" said Robert.
"Rob, pipe down, it's fine where it is," said his mother, turning to look back at him. "Are you winning your game?" She looked at the girls. "Everyone cool enough? It's about 30 minutes till we get there."
Xi gave her the thumbs up sign, and Pearl and Robin nodded.
"I'm gonna take a nap," said Xi. She dozed while Pearl and Robin sang quietly to the praise and worship music.
The first stop was at a Christian bookstore. Pearl explored with Robin, while Uncle Burt and Lucas watched Robert. Queen Mother and Risa helped Xi choose a Bible. The girls and got music CDS, while Lucas got a book. Robert found a plush lamb toy.
They finished shopping and got back in the truck. "What did you get?" asked Pearl.
"It's--" she pulled it out of the bag. "A Truth for Youth Bible," said Xi. "It's pretty cool, with lots of art in the front." She opened it and showed Pearl. "I didn't know Bibles had art!"
"That's neat!" said Pearl. "I remember my comic book Bible, with lots of art. Now I have an Adventure Bible. It's zebra print, which is cool." She looked at the couple of the first pages of Xi’s Bible. “Wow, this is great! There’s art in my Bible, but not like this!"
"It's really cool, 'cause they have Spanish Bibles too," said Risa. "I got some for my sixth graders for Christmas."
Xi sat up. “You can give Bibles to your students?”
“Sure can—in this Christian school,” Risa said. “It should be that way in all public schools, because the earth is the LORD’s and the fullness thereof, and all the peoples therein! That’s Psalm 24:1, and it includes every student in every school—from preschool through university!” Risa stopped and took a breath.
     “Preach, Risa!” said Burt.
     Queen Mother nodded. “Amen!”
“I’ve taught in public school before, and one day right after the kids left, I was told by the principal to take the name of Jesus off my whiteboard. It had been up there a few weeks. It said, 'I love you and Jesus loves you!'”
     “Did you?” said Xi.
Risa continued. “I asked him why, and he said because if we left Jesus’ name up there, we’d have to put Allah’s and Mohammed’s and Buddha’s, and all the others. I just looked him in the eye and respectfully said, ‘You know that Jesus was the only One Who rose again and He’s alive and coming back! Things are changing!"”
“Amen!” said Burt. “Preach it, Darlin!”
Risa smiled, and looked both ways as she waited to turn. “He just told me again to take it off and left. I didn’t want to, but I knew I was supposed to respect his decision—even though it was an anti-Christ spirit. There are some things I’d refuse to do, of course, even if I lost my job!"

Her voice grew stronger, as she said, "Anyway, I asked the LORD what to do, and He impressed me to write, ‘You are loved by everyone that matters.’ So I did. Sure enough, the principal returned quickly—probably to see if I’d done what he told me. He looked at what I’d written and didn’t say a word, but gave me some papers to file.”                                                                                     “Did the kids notice?” asked Pearl’s mother. “Yes! They asked me about it the next day,” said Risa. “I just said I was told to take Jesus’ name off the board.” She shook her head, but smiled a bit. “Precious sweeties! Some of them were pretty upset, and wanted to know who made me do that. They were only fourth grade, so I just said, ‘Jesus always loves you; the devil hates that Name, but Jesus is your best Friend. He’s always with you, even if His name isn’t on the board!”
Risa laughed. “God always works for good what the enemy means for evil—within a couple weeks, three of my sweet girls were excited to tell me they were born again and going to be baptized! So the LORD works all things together!”
Pearl and Robin smiled wide and gave each other a high-five. “Genesis 50:20!” Pearl said.
“Yes, the devil’s always trying to get rid of Jesus’ mighty name,” said Pearl’s mother. "But he loses, and we win!"
"That reminds me of when I was a college intern at a large technology company,” she continued. ”I worked with engineers and other pros from all over the world, on the 50th floor of a 60-story building. Most of them had moved to the States to work here, and spoke multiple languages."

"One day, a big, tall man in the neighboring group suddenly blocked my path back to my desk and said, ‘You cannot have two names! You cannot have two names!’"
She frowned and shook her head. “I finally understood what he meant, when he pointed at the name plates on my cubicle. I did have ‘two names’--two plates; my name, and a plate that said "JESUS." The LORD gave me wisdom, and instead of arguing, I said, “Fine!” and took the JESUS plate and put it over mine.”                                                                                                               She laughed loudly. “That man was trying to bully me—which is what the devil does—but the LORD got lots of glory out of this! And truly, my name is hidden in His!” She laughed and raised her hand up to do the Victory sign in the air.
     “That’s cool!” said Xi.
“Yeah!” said Pearl. “Jesus is the Coolest! And He’s always doing Genesis 50:20, and Romans 8:28!”
“Okay, Princess, what do they say?” said Xi.
“Genesis says that what the devil meant for bad God works for good and—“
“She has her own New Testament now,” said Burt, “so she can look up Romans!” said Burt.
Xi looked uncomfortable. “Yeah, I guess so…..” She got her Bible out of the bag and opened it about halfway.
“There’s a list of the books in the front,” said Lucas from behind her. “Want me to help you?”
“Sure,” said Xi. “Thanks.” She turned around and handed it to him. He turned to the right place and handed it back to her.
"Wow, that was fast," said Xi. "Thanks, Lucas!"
"Hey, let me show you the Table of Contents," Robin said kindly, "so you'll know how to find your place next time, okay?" She took Xi's Bible and turned to the front. "There. See? He's not that good!" she said, and turned around to wink at him. "My brother knows some, but the page numbers help knowing where to go."
     "Sure, thanks," said Xi.
"Thanks for giving away my secret!" said Lucas, pretending to be offended.
     Xi laughed a bit.
Robin showed her the table of contents and turned to Romans 8:28, then handed Xi's Bible back to her.
Xi read a few verses silently.

This is so exciting! Pearl thought. “So what do you think, Xi?"
“Sounds like God makes it all work somehow for those that love Him and are called,” Xi said. “How do I know if I love Him and am called?”
“Great questions, Xi,” said Pearl’s mother. “First, when you love someone, you want to spend time with them, and not do anything to hurt them. God says when we love and do His Word—the Bible, which is His love letter to us to help us know what He thinks about us and the best way to live—then we love Him.       We are all called to become more like Him every day, for He is Love! That’s I John 4:8.”
“Hmm,” said Xi, still looking at her Bible.
“One way we show true Love is to forgive others when they hurt us,” said Pearl’s mother.
Xi didn’t respond, but kept reading.
She’s still reading, thought Pearl. Great, Daddy God! Now You’re working more than ever!
