Princess Pearl, P.O.W.E.R. Girl! Book Two - Ch. 11 - God's Goodness

by Tonja Taylor
10/11/2021 / Short Stories

While the adults talked with Maria, Xavier and Robert talked. Burt held Robert’s hand on one side, and the little boy’s on the other.
Good, thought Pearl. Xavier seems happy now. Maybe he can be Robert’s new friend, so he’ll have someone to play with!
“I’ll take the orders,” Lucas said, pulling a paper and pen out of his jeans pocket.
“You’re always so organized!” said Robin. “I want a Number Six.”
Lucas wrote everything down and took the list to Burt, who was almost at the front of the line.

Perfect timing! Pearl thought. She grabbed a napkin and said, "I want to stay in touch with them. Robin, will you put it in Spanish for me, por favor?"
"Sure," she said, "but put the English below it. That will help them compare and learn better.”
Pearl took a deep breath. This is a little scary, but a lot exciting, to speak another language to help others know God!
"Spanish is cool,” said Xi. “I think I know the numbers, but that's all.”
“We can help teach you, if you want,” said Robin.
“I’m catching up on reading and math right now,” said Xi. “But thanks. And Mrs. Williams is teaching me a bit--"
     "un poco," said Robin.
"un poco," repeated Xi. "Anyway, it's cool to learn another language."
"Yes!" said Pearl. "And you already do!" She wrote on the napkin. "What do you mean?" Xi said.
     "Music!" Pearl said, and grinned.
"Well, I've been in junior high band a few years--mainly to get outta town on the trips."
I hope GraceLight Academy has a band and trips, too! thought Pearl. She finished and read what she’d written on the napkin: “Dear Ms. Maria and Hahveeaire, God loves you, and we love you. Please keep in touch and let us know how you are doing! Maybe you can visit some time. God bless you!”
She slid the paper over to Robin and Lucas.

They read it, and Lucas smiled. Robin giggled.
     “What?” said Pearl.
"Pearl, you spell the little boy's name 'X-a-v-i-e-r,' not 'Hahveeaire,'” Lucas said, “but I guess you spelled it like it sounds, right?" He laughed.
     Pearl laughed and nodded.

Xi snorted. "You spell it with an X? My X sounds like a Z, but his X sounds like an H?"
Robin nodded. "Yes. And we people of Spanish origin often have four or five names. Hey, Pearl, one of his names is 'Juan.' Just say that--it'll be easier!" She laughed and hit the table, enjoying her own joke.
"Hmm," said Pearl. "How do I spell it?"
     Robin giggled again. "J-u-a-n."
Pearl looked at Xi, who was trying not to laugh.
"Are you serious?" said Pearl. "Where's the W?" This is confusing! she thought. How am I going to get this? But Jesus, You know all languages, so You’ll help me!
"Princess," Lucas said. "The J and U at the beginning make it sound like “Wh”--kind of like ‘whale"--but no aye de que,"
"What?" said Pearl. "Um....no comprende!"                                                                                 Xi and Robin giggled again.

Lucas said, "It means no worries. Just relax, Pearl. If I can learn English, you can learn Espanol!"
"What's so funny?" Risa said, approaching the table.
"I need help with my Spanish, Ms. Risa!" said Pearl, handing the napkin to her.
“Necessita mucho ayude!” said Lucas, and smiled.
"Yes, no worries, Pearl,” said Ms. Risa. “You're doing all right. Espanol is actually easy to learn, compared to others. Spanish and English share many cognates—”
“Dear Risa," said Burt, as he patted Risa's shoulder, "your teacher self is kicking in. I’m not sure what a cognate is, and I don’t think the kids care right now. We’re next up, so let’s make sure we are ready to eat when they call our number.”
“Okay, Big Burt, you got it,” she said, and patted him on the arm.
“Big Bird?” said Juan, and looked excited. He stared at Burt.
Burt chuckled loudly, and the rest of the group laughed.
“Hey Uncle Burt,” said Pearl, “can we call you Big Bird now?”
“Hey Big Bird!” said Robert. “You are the biggest bird in the world!”
“Hmmm,” Burt said, looking himself up and down. “I’d need a load of yellow feathers for that, right? And a beak. A big beak. And some funny-looking feet—”
“Burt,” teased Risa, “is there something you need to tell me?” She laughed, and others laughed too.                                                                                                                                               Maria and Juan looked curious, and laughed with the rest.
"Uncle Burt," said Pearl, "where is that verse about God's kindness leading us to say we're sorry? Is it Romans something?"
"There are several, if you think about it right," he said, "but you probably mean Romans 2:4." He pulled out a King James New Testament from his pocket, and flipped to it. "Here it is: Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?                                                                                    "What do all those big words mean?" Xi whispered to Pearl.
"It just means God is good and we should remember that and mind Him, and apologize when we don't," said Pearl. "That's pretty close, anyway."
      "OK, thanks," Xi whispered back.
"Burt's my Word Man!" said Risa.
     "Big Bird!" insisted Robert.
"How about 'The Big Word-Bird,'" teased Pearl.
Burt laughed. "I know who I am, and God knows who I am, so you guys can call me what you want. Just keep it nice, okay?"
They laughed again, and Queen Mother said, "I think they're calling our number."
Burt and the boys went to get the food.
“Wow,” Xi said to Pearl. “Does your uncle always have a Bible?”
“Yes,” said Pearl. “Even in his truck. He says you never know when the LORD may tell you to pull over and look up a verse. He started doing that when he was a peace officer—“
“Is that the same as a cop?” Xi asked.
“Yes,” Pearl replied. “Uncle Burt says the real name for them is peace officer, because their job is to keep things peaceful. Anyway, on his shift, if he wasn’t having to chase someone down or pull someone over or check something out, he’d read the Word. Sometimes other officers would ride with him, and he’d talk to them about how they needed angels to help and protect them. And he always played Christian music in his patrol car, too!"
     “Hmmm,” Xi said. “Really?”
“Yes!” said Pearl. “And when he had to handcuff a person and put them in the car to take them to jail, he’d start telling them about Jesus!”
     “Wow,” said Xi again. “Cool!”
“Slow down, Bub!” they heard Burt say. Robert was carrying a drink in each hand, and walking fast toward the table.
Don't drop ‘em, Robert! thought Pearl.
Robert gave the drinks to Maria and Juan, who looked very happy.
     "Muchas gracias!" said Maria.
     Juan nodded. "Si, si!"
Awww, that was sweet! Pearl thought. God is always working!
"Dios es muy bueno!" said Burt. "God is very good! Now, let's thank Him for our food."

They all grabbed hands and bowed their heads. As Burt prayed, Pearl peeked, and saw Xavier Juan looking around at everyone, then looking at the food, then looking at all the people around him again. He smiled a big, happy smile.
Sweet little boy! thought Pearl, smiling. God loves you and your mother so much, and He planned this for you today, to understand His love more! Her heart felt very warm. Jesus, You are so good, and always right on time!
