Princess Pearl, P.O.W.E.R. Girl! Book Two - Ch. 16 - From Upside-Down to Rightside-Up

"How's it goin', Charlotte?" said Burt as they walked in. "I'm sure you'd have rather been at church, right?" He laughed a bit.

"That's an understatement!" she said, turning back to Robert, who was trying to pull her hand off his arm. "We were just talking about how doing the wrong thing can cause you to be upside down--just like Puddy Tat, who was supposed to be sitting on the couch, and somehow jumped across the room, all by himself!"

I'm so glad I was at church! Pearl thought. But now, Queen Mother is probably not going to want to talk about us going to GraceLight. Robert is always causing trouble for me!

"I didn't do it!" he said.

"Robert, please don't lie," said his mother, softly but firmly. He sat down on the floor and kicked the couch.

"Bub, you know what to do," his uncle said, walking toward the couch. He picked up another stuffed animal, a flying dinosaur, colored yellow and green. He held it up and pretended it was talking. "Always tell the truth, right Rob?"

"Yeah, you should do what Puh-terry the Pterodactyl says!" Pearl said. He hates that name, haha!

"Shut up, Pearl!" said Robert. "It's just TERRY!"

She looked at her mother. Isn't she going to make him apologize for telling me to shut up? Pearl glared at her little brother. Ooh! I forgive him, anyway, Jesus! Please fix him! Or let him be the kid of a missionary in some other country, starting today!

"Okay, son, first, you get Puddy Tat out of the trashcan," said their mother. "We're going to help him be right-side up now."

Robert pulled him out and hugged him.

"See?" said his mother, a little more gently. "That is what King Jesus did for us. He got us all out of the trashcan, when we were upside-down and very stinky and yucky, and about to be thrown out forever!"

Robert didn't say anything. He just held Puddy Tat.

"Now, it's time for you to take a time out," said his mother. "I have had enough. And keep your voice down, because Xi is sleeping." She stood up and walked him over to the couch and sat him down.

He tried to pull away from her, but didn't say anything.

She put Puddy Tat and the other toy in his hands and said, "Now you apologize to Puddy Tat for throwing him in the trash can, and tell both your toys it's always best to tell the truth."

She hugged him and said, "I love you, and I'm going to give you ten minutes to sit on the couch and think about all of this. Then I expect you to come to the table and eat lunch properly. After that, you will have a nap--and you will stay in your room until I come get you. Do you understand?"

He nodded. A tear fell down his cheek. His mother sighed and went to her desk to set the timer.

"Bub, you gotta do right," said his uncle, and patted him on the head. He walked toward the kitchen. "I'm going to make lunch."

"I'll help you," said Pearl. In the kitchen, she whispered, "When do you think we can talk to her about GraceLight?"

"Not now, Punkin," he said. "I know your mother, and there's too much going on. She's just dealt with Robert, and is going to have to do some homeschooling for Xi and such."

He put the casserole in the microwave. "I know you and Rob doubled up in the summer before you moved here, but Xi needs to do a few weeks of work, then start back with you in January."

He opened the refrigerator, and said, “Let’s wait until Christmas or so to talk about it, okay? And you need to pray grace and strength and wisdom for your mom, more than ever. I can help Xi some, but it's mainly going to be on your mom. I expect you to help Xi if she needs it, too. And keep praying for her."

"Yes, Sir," said Pearl.

Her mother came through the door a few minutes later. "Miracles of miracles," she said. "Robert's still on the couch!" She shook her head. "I know God has great plans for him."

"Yep," Burt said. "Ready to eat?"

"Yes! Let me get a few bites before he gets in here." They sat down, said the blessing over the food, and started eating.

The timer went off and Robert walked in, surprisingly quiet. He ate a bit, then Burt took him to his room and tucked him in bed.

"I'm going to feed the horses," Burt said, as he returned to the kitchen.

"I think I'll lie down," said Queen Mother. "Pearl, are you going to rest? I don't know if Xi is up or not. She can help herself later.”

"I think I'll go to my treehouse for a while," Pearl said. "But I did want to ask you something." Then she felt a heaviness in her heart. LORD, I guess I should wait about school, like Uncle Burt says. Phooey.

"What is it, Sweetie?" her mother said.

She sounds tired, Pearl thought.  I'll wait, like Uncle Burt said. But I don’t know if I can wait till Christmas! Anyway, I sure don't want her to say no!

"Um...Can we invite Ms. Risa and Robin and Lucas over for Thanksgiving dinner?" Pearl said.  "That would be so fun."

Her mother sighed. "Wow, it's already November! Can we talk about this after my nap?" She laughed. "That'll re-energize me, okay?"

"Yes ma'am," said Pearl. "I'll help you cook, and we'll make it easy for you. Maybe we can play games or go trail riding, or--"

"Sweetie, let's talk about this later today," said her mother, as she started walking to the bedroom. "Robert is supposed to stay in his room, but if you seem him outside by himself for some reason, come get me."

"Yes ma'am," Pearl said. "Maybe I can block the door so he can't get out."

"Sure, why not?" Her mother smiled and waved as she shut the door to her room.

That brat better do what she says! Pearl thought, then felt a little guilty. I guess I won't really block the door. Jesus, You're going to have to help me love him better. Only You can do that!
