Princess Pearl, P.O.W.E.R. Girl! Book Two - Ch. 17 - Danger in the Field

by Tonja Taylor
10/11/2021 / Short Stories

You are so good, Jesus! thought Pearl. It's nice and quiet here, just You and me. I'm so glad we can all rest! Think I'll lie back and watch the sunlight and listen to the water.

She rolled up her blanket and put it behind her head for a pillow. The breeze was gentle, and the sound of the water was soothing. The leaves are gorgeous, Daddy God! She imagined lovely waterfalls and sunsets. Thank You for making fall! It’s my favorite season! Think I'll take a nap while they do.

She heard Vivace bark. What is she doing outside? Pearl thought.

Watchman barked too, and Pearl thought she heard the back door shut. Hmm. I guess Queen Mother didn't rest long, Maybe she needs me. Or maybe it's Xi, and she can join me!

She sat up, excited, but didn't see anyone. Maybe I imagined it, she thought, and laid back down. But then she heard a noise. She looked out the back of her tree house. She could see the uncle in the far field, with the horses. They seemed calm.

Maybe it's the bull and cows or something, she thought. She looked at the pen closest to her, and could see the huge bull grazing. There were several cows, and white cow birds riding some of their backs. She laid back down. Her eyes shut, and she heard Watchman bark again, then another noise, but it sounded like a voice this time.

"Jesus, please open my eyes!" she said. If it works for Queen Mother to say that, I know it will work for me, she thought. Help me see, please!

She pulled back some limbs and leaves and looked out the south side of her tree house. There, kicking and hitting the gate to the bull pen, was Robert.

Watchman was beside him, moving around. I should have blocked the door! she thought.

"Stop, Robert!" she shouted at him, but he didn't seem to hear. Brat! Always making trouble! I'm going to get Queen Mother!

She rushed down the ladder, and shouted again, but this time she didn't see him. Silly boy, I bet he climbed the gate!

She ran to the back door. I sure hate to wake her up, but oooh, he's in for it now! He'll be grounded for a month, I bet!

Then she felt her feelings of revenge turn to fear. There's some reason he shouldn't go through the field.......

She ran in the house, and throwing open the door to her mother’s room, she said, “Queen Mother! Robert left the house and is going through the field!"

Her mother sat up, and blinked. "Sorry, Queen Mother, but you said to wake you if Robert went outside, and he was kicking the gate when I was in my treehouse and then I didn't see him and he must have climbed the gate--"

Her mother rubbed her eyes. "What? The field? Oh no! That's where the big bull is! He's nasty, and if Robert tries to cross the pasture--”

Pearl remembered Uncle Burt had talked about selling the bull at the end of October. “He could be killed!” she said, and started praying for him. "Thank You, Father, that Your angels always watch over him. I plead the Blood of Jesus over my lil' brother!"

Her mother grabbed the phone from the nightstand and hit speed dial. “Oh, pick up, Burt!” She left a message. "He must have his phone off. I should have insisted he sell that bull already! Of course, Robert should not have gone in there!"

She looked at her daughter and drew a deep breath. “Pearl, forgive me. I should have prayed even before I picked the phone up--just like I’ve taught you to do.”

“But I’ve been praying, Queen Mother.”

“Yes, and I’m very proud of you. Now, let’s sit on the couch and pray together. Remember, when we agree according to the Word, it is done!”

“Amen!” said Pearl, feeling a little better at her mother’s calm strength. They sat on the couch and held hands.

“Dear Father God,” prayed Pearl's mother, “You are well able to keep Robert that we have committed to You. Thank You for the Blood of Jesus. Thank You for the covenant of protection Robert has as Your child--”

“But Mother,” Pearl interrupted, “Robert has never said he believes, has he?”

“Shhh. We’ll talk later, Pearl,” said her mother, and hugged her. “Father, I thank You that You did not give us a spirit of fear, so I refuse to fear, in Jesus name!”

She shrugged and threw her hands back, as if literally shaking it off, then continued. “I thank You that You are merciful and faithful, keeping Covenant with a thousand generations of those who revere You. I thank You that You are our refuge and strength and very present help in trouble. Father, I plead the Blood of Jesus over Robert right now for his safety. Only You know his heart, and we declare You are turning it to You, LORD. But we know that children who don't have full understanding yet are covered by Your precious blood."

She gripped Pearl's hand more tightly. "We thank You that Your angel is going with him right now to protect him, LORD, to hide him in the secret place, because he is my child and Yours, even if he has not yet accepted You. But I know he will soon, because there are many God-seeds in him, and I dedicated him to You when he was born.”

Pearl felt her mother's grip relax a little bit. She paused, and Pearl peeked and saw tears falling from her mother’s eyes.

She snuggled closer to her. How I love my Queen Mother, Jesus. Thank You that she trusts You! Pearl thought.

“Thank You, LORD, that You are faithful to Your promises," continued her mother. "Thank You that, because I walk uprightly to obey You and follow You every way I know how, that blessed are my children after me. I claim all the rights I have with You as a tither. I tell the devil to get his filthy, defeated hands off and away from my son right now, in the Name of Jesus!"

Then she prayed in the language of the Holy Spirit for a bit.

That sounds so beautiful, but strange, Pearl thought. She says it's God's perfect prayer, and that the angels understand it and go to work. I want to do that sometime!

Then her mother prayed in English again. "Thank You, LORD, that because I tithe as You command, You are faithful to rebuke the devil--that devourer and destroyer, that dragon--from every part of our lives. Hallelujah! Father, thank You that You are keeping that nasty killer bull away from my son! In JESUS' name! Not one of his bones will be broken, as You say in Psalm 34! And Prince of Peace, please give us the peace that only You can give right now. We thank You for it and receive it. In Jesus' Name, Amen!”

She let out a big sigh, and hugged Pearl. "God's got this."

"Amen. No worries, Mother." Pearl hugged her back.

Her mother pretended to be shocked. "What? I am not 'Queen' today?"

"Always!" Pearl said, and giggled. They both stood. “Now, little Pearl, let’s do what we do every morning.”

“More Bible study?” Pearl said.

Her mother smiled again. “No, dear, although that would probably be excellent right now! But I’m going to put on some praise music and keep working. I’ve got to get this project done and delivered by noon tomorrow. What I meant was, let’s do what Jesus commands and cast all our cares on Him. Ready?”

She balled up both fists right above her shoulders, waiting. Pearl did the same. “One, two, three--go away, worries!” and with the last word, they did a motion toward the sky as if they were throwing weights away from themselves, to Heaven.

Her mother sighed a deep sigh, as if indeed a great burden had been lifted. “There now!” said Queen Mother. "We've given the LORD all our worries. So now, we'll receive His peace." She reached up to Heaven and made a motion as if she was getting something, and she touched her forehead and heart area. "He gives us His peace that guards our hearts and minds. Hallelujah!”

Pearl did the same, and felt peace flow over her. God is so amazing! she thought. I'm so thankful He is real!

"Precious, why don’t put on my favorite worship CD and worship with me, okay?”

"Yes ma'am," said Pearl. As the music started playing, she sat with her mother on the couch and sang along softly. Pearl felt great peace. I love You, Jesus!

She looked at the cell phone in her mother’s hand, and thought, I know You’re watching over Robert, like Queen Mother said; Life goes well for the Righteous. I believe Uncle Burt will call with good news!

The song ended, and Pearl’s mother said, “Okay, Sweetie, I need to get some work done.” She stood up and headed toward her office.

Pearl felt a stab of fear. “Mother,” Pearl asked, “What if Uncle Burt doesn’t call back? Shouldn’t we go look for Robert?” He's such a brat, thought Pearl. But I love him and don't want him hurt!

"Pearl, say this: 'Fear, I resist you, in the Name of Jesus!'" She did. I feel stronger now! she thought

“Precious, fear is an evil spirit, and we must resist it with our words and actions. This may be a little hard for you to understand, but Robert truly is in God’s hands. If we tried to follow him now, we’d most likely get lost and probably run into the bull ourselves. I don’t know the field, but Burt does. So, I remind myself right now that Robert is not lost. God knows exactly where he is; He knew about this before the world began."

She paused, and took another deep breath. "Pearl, Burt will call and all will be well."

Pearl smiled. Queen Mother is a woman of such great faith! She went up and hugged her mother again. “Thank you for teaching me about God!”

Her mother turned and looked deep into her eyes. "Jesus is our peace, Pearl. He is the Living Word. He is true Life! God always comes through, Sweetie. He is always faithful and always good. His grace covers so much--including Robert’s disobedience. So I don’t want you to look at my faith--for even that is from God. Remember God’s amazing grace!”

"I love you!" Pearl said.

"I love you too, Pearl,” she said, looking at her phone. “Now, I'm going to work."

"I'm going to my room," Pearl said, and started walking upstairs. Maybe Xi is up, and will play a game with me, Pearl thought. She heard a few notes of her mother's ringtone of ‘How Great Thou Art,’ and ran back down the stairs.

She heard her mother say, "Oh praise the LORD! Thank you, Burt! I'll talk to Robert, then we need to take him to the doc in the morning to get checked out. See you boys in a bit!”

Joy leapt in Pearl's heart, and she grabbed her mother’s hands as she jumped up and down. “Thank You for my mother and her power prayers and for keeping Robert safe!” she said. “You are so good! Please let this be a lesson to Robert. Thank You for saving his life! "Yes, LORD!” her mother said. “What happened?”

“Burt shot the bull in the neck!” her mother said. “And the angel had his hand over Robert—of course--because he ran and hid behind the feed trough, just as the bull was charging him. Thank the LORD he got away from those horns and hooves, but that bull is so heavy, it could have broken his bones or skull from crushing him between the trough and the fence. It's really a miracle that it wasn't much worse!"

Pearl just nodded and listened, and hugged her mother again.

"He does have bruises all over him, but those will heal," her mother said. A tear of relief slid down her cheek. "I’m so glad this is not an emergency—God is so faithful! He has turned the curse into a blessing!”

“Where is that, Queen Mother?”

“Old Testament—Deuteronomy or Nehemiah, I think."

The door opened and Burt came in carrying Robert, who was hugging his neck tightly and crying.

Pearl's mother rushed up to her son and held him. "I love you, Baby! Jesus and His angel kept that mean bull from killing you--and helped Uncle Burt shoot right. Thank goodness! We're going to take you to see Doctor Ben tomorrow," she said gently, rocking him from side to side.

"No!" said Robert.

"Yes, Precious, then we'll get you an ice cream, OK?" Robert kept crying but didn't speak.

"Pearl, would you please get his Puddy Tat?"

Pearl turned to run up the stairs, and there was Xi.

"Wow," Xi said. "What did I miss? How long did I sleep?"

"A long time," Pearl said. "But you're seeing the best part--God protected Robert and He's helping me to love that little brat--I mean, brother--more!"

"Cool," said Xi. "Thanks for washing and drying my clothes, by the way. I found them on the bed."

"Queen Mother or Uncle Burt must have done that," Pearl said. "They are great people. They go around doing good, like Jesus!"

"No doubt!" said Xi.

"I gotta get Robert's toy now," Pearl said, and ran up the stairs. Before she got to his room, she heard her mother lift her voice in loud praise to the LORD again. She smiled. Thank You, God, for giving me a mother who loves and trusts and praises You, and for teaching me to do that!

Robert's room was messy, with toys scattered on the floor and bed. A tear ran down her cheek. Please forgive me for being rude to him, LORD. I know he misses our daddy, probably much more than me, because they’re both guys. Were guys. LORD, only You can heal Robert's heart. Just help me to not get in the way! She hugged Puddy Tat. Help him feel You hug him like this!

She came down and saw Xi greet her mother and Rob. "Glad you're still on earth, Robert, so I can get to know you!"

He didn't say anything.

Pearl got in front of him and made Puddy Tat pretend to talk. "We love you, Rob. Even your sissie loves you! She brought me to you, and wants to give you a hug." Rob opened his eyes a bit, took the toy, and didn't protest when Pearl stood on her tiptoes to hug him as much as she could. Thank You, LORD, Pearl thought. Look what You have done--Genesis 50:20!
