Princess Pearl, P.O.W.E.R. Girl! Book Two - Ch. 21 - Much to Be Thankful For

by Tonja Taylor
10/11/2021 / Short Stories

"They're back!" said Pearl, seeing her mother's car come up the driveway. She jumped up from the board game with Robin and opened the garage door.

The women got out of the car, each carrying bags.

"Queen Mother," Pearl asked, "can we please have Robin and Lucas and Ms. Risa over for Thanksgiving, then go on trail rides? We've been talking about desserts we can make."

"Pearl, here--" said her mother, handing her a bag, "carry this in the house, and we'll talk."

They got all the stuff in, and as she was putting things away, Queen Mother said, "We made a new friend today at the health food store. Her name is Sophia, and she lives up the hill from us, in that beautiful Frank Lloyd Wright house!"

"Frank? Is he her husband?" Robin said.

Risa laughed. "No Baby, that's the name of the architect who designed the style of her house."

"Architect?" Pearl said. Cool word. "Can we go see her? Does she have any kids to play with?"

"No," said her mother, "but we've invited her for Thanksgiving lunch--which is only two weeks or so away!"

"Yay! That'll be great! So there will be nine of us!"

"Ten." said her mother, then smiled. "Ten?" Pearl named them out loud again, and looked at Robin, who also looked concerned. Maybe she's tired, thought Pearl.

"Queen Mother, there are only nine!"

Her mother winked at Risa and laughed. "Are you forgetting the main Royal Guest?"

"Oh!" said Pearl. "Yes, King Jesus! Of course! Hey! Can Robin and I plan the menu and do some special cooking? We want to make a dessert, and maybe another dish or two. And Xi may want to cook too." She probably had to do all the cooking where she used to live! Pearl thought.

"Sure!" said her mother. "You guys write down what you want. I will also call Ms. Sophia and ask what she likes, in case she's on a special diet or something."

"C'mon, Robin! Let's go make the list!" said Pearl, and jumped up. As they walked up the stairs to her room, Pearl said, "This is going to be so great! Thank You, Jesus! And I'm excited to have a new friend for us all, too!"

Pearl opened a sparkly notebook and grabbed a pen. "Okay, what should we make?"

"Well, I guess sopapillas are out for now!"

"Sopa--what?" "Soh-pah-pee-yahs. They are light dough, fried, with cinnamon, and you put butter and honey on them. Delish!" Robin said. "Mom makes them at least once a month. But I really like an amazing pumpkin pie I ate at a church party once," she said. "It had like, cream cheese mixed in it or something! It was sooooo good!"

"Mmmm!" Pearl said. "Yeah, let's do that! And something with fruit, too. Queen Mother and Uncle Burt really like fruit."

"Hmm," said Pearl. "I wonder what Xi likes."

Robin nodded. "Where is she, anyway?"

"Working," said Pearl, and wrote on her list. "Her boss was nice to give her more hours, and then she's doing homeschool with Queen Mother when she gets off. I’m glad I’m done till January, though!”

"She's been through a lot, from what you told me,” Robin said, writing ingredients for the pie.

"Yes," Pearl said, "but she is learning that the real God is sweet and likes to give her stuff and take care of her! Anyway, what about apple pie? Does your mom like that?"

"How about a fresh fruit salad, with pineapple and cherries and grapes and pecans, and whipped topping?" "Okay, but the whipped topping needs to be organic," said Pearl. "None of that spray-can stuff."

"Yeah, we don't use that either," Robin said. "What we use is healthier, and still tastes good. I'm glad we have smart moms that feed us healthy food."

"Right!" Pearl said.

"Perhaps you could have nine fruits--one for each part of the Spirit," said Pearl's mother, standing at the door. She smiled. "Burt will probably cook a bird, and I will make lots of dishes, like the mashed potatoes and dressing and cranberry sauce, and artichokes and asparagus, and such. "

Mom does a great turkey," said Robin. "It's so juicy! She'ss got it down just right, with butter and grape juice, and apples and oranges in the pan, and yum! So we'll do that."

"When Xi gets back, I'll ask her if she wants to help," said Pearl’s mother. "We pray she will be off, although with a convenience store being every day, she may have to work. But I'll believe she'll at least get to have the lunch and afternoon with us!"

Jesus, please help her be off! Pearl thought.

"Ladies, how about this?" her mother said. "You girls choose nine bottles—I have clear kombucha bottles you can use. Take off the labels and scrub off the glue. I knew I saved them for some reason. We’ll get stickers and markers, and after lunch, we can share things we’re thankful for and write them on paper to put in the bottles, then decorate them.”

“Great idea!” said Pearl.

“Yeah, this will be fun!” said Robin.

“We can keep them and add to them through the year, and bring them back for the next Thanksgiving,” said Pearl’s mother. “We’ll all be amazed at what the LORD has done. We all have much to be thankful for!"
