Princess Pearl, P.O.W.E.R. Girl! Book Two - Ch. 24 - Xi Overcoming to Visit Her Mom

by Tonja Taylor
10/12/2021 / Short Stories

Xi, you can come up with me into my la casita la arbol if you like," said Pearl, putting her foot on the first step of the treehouse ladder. "But you have to stay on the ground, Vivace," she said, then hugged her dog and put her down.

Vivace whined and leaned against her.

"Your what?" Xi reached down to pat the dog. "Little dancing black mop!" she said. "You're cute!"

Pearl giggled. "Oh Xi, she's not a mop, okay? Robert calls her that, so please don't," Pearl said. "But what I said is Spanish for 'little tree house.'" She started climbing.

"Oh, sure, your Royal Highness," said Xi, watching her. "You're right. Mops don't dance!" She smiled. "You really like Spanish, don't you?"

"Yes, and I want to learn much more," said Pearl, topping the ladder. She sat down, her legs dangling over the edge. “Aren't you coming up?"

Xi counted. "Twelve steps! That's pretty high."

"Not compared to an airplane in the sky," joked Pearl.

Xi laughed, and carefully put her foot on the bottom step. "I'm heavier than you--"

"Uncle Burt makes things really strong. He climbed up with no problem, then jumped up and down, to test the rope and the floor. So you're OK!"

Xi looked unsure, but she climbed the ladder and sat next to Pearl. "Now what?"

"I like to sit here and think, and watch to the water flow in the fountain while I also listen to great Jesus music." She gave one ear bud to Xi and put the other in her ear, and turned on her iPod. "Enjoy."

Xi carefully wiped off the ear bud, and put it in one ear.

As the music played, Pearl saw her gaze at the three-tiered stone fountain next to the house, then up at the canopy of leaves over them. After a couple minutes, Xi said, "Not bad. They sound like they're in a good mood."

"But of course." said Pearl. "If people are really praising and worshiping God, they'd have to be in a good mood! Let's hear it again. This is one of my favorites, then I want you to hear my next favorite after that."

Xi sat patiently, hanging her legs off the edge of the treehouse floor like Pearl did. After a few minutes, she shifted, as if she were uncomfortable, and took the ear bud out. “Don’t you get tired of hearing the same thing over and over?”

“I told you I liked those a lot," Pearl said. "But it depends. Sometimes I want to hear a certain song 'cause I know it really gets me in a deep mood, like to worship God, or be really happy, or maybe deeper, and I just want to get really tuned in, like Queen Mother says.”

She closed her eyes, then opened them and looked right at Xi. “You know, don’t you do that with the rock you listen to?”

“No, I don’t listen to a song more than once at a time," said Xi, sounding a little bothered. "And, for your information, dear Princess, I stopped listening to most of that hard stuff over the past couple weeks. I didn't figure you'd want to hear it anyway. It’s weird, but some of it just sounds a lot like noise now, like drunk guys banging their heads on glass trashcans or something."

She shook her head. “I still like drums and electric guitar though--and I heard some in your songs. One guy was even singing what I've felt lately, which was weird. I thought you guys just sang about God!”

Pearl beamed, and jumped up. “Yes!" Vivace barked and danced around, watching her master.

Watchman got up from his spot on the back porch and wagged his tail as he looked up at them.

"Yes what?" Xi said.

Pearl smiled really big and jumped up and down again. “God is helping you with it, like we prayed!”

Xi looked confused. “We prayed? Gee, aren't you going to break through the floor if you keep jumping up and down?"

“Yes, Xiomara Farrar! I mean, No!" Pearl laughed. "Yes, we prayed and no, I told you, Uncle Burt makes things solid. You won't fall! Don’t you remember we prayed right after you moved in for God to help you listen to the good stuff that He lives in?”

“Lives in? What? Sometimes it's like you're from another planet!"

Right! thought Pearl. I am! She laughed, then said, “Okay, it doesn’t matter if you remember. Point is, God remembers. He never forgets anything--but our sins! And He lives in our praise!”

“Okay, whatever," Xi said. "It must be working. But I still like rock 'n' roll!" She looked at her nails. "He's going to have to wean me off of it, I guess. But it won't be easy!"

"He can make things easy!” Pearl said, hearing Queen Mother's words in her heart; The prayers of a P.O.W.E.R. Princess get results! She laughed, and gave God a high-five in the air. "No problem, Xi," said Pearl. "God likes a challenge, and with Him, all things are possible!"

"We'll see if it's possible that He can help me know what to say when I see Mom tomorrow--if she's even there, or if she will even open the door!" Xi said sadly.

What do I say? Pearl thought. Help us find something else good to talk about!

"Hey Xi, did you like the horses? Isn't Surprise gorgeous?"

"Yes!" said Xi. "I had no idea horses could have blue eyes! When is her baby gonna be born?"

"Uncle Burt says around Christmas, maybe even the new year. It will be so cute!"

"Are you going to ride it? It’s yours, right?" "I can't ride her for a couple years," said Pearl.

"Horses have to grow up and be strong enough to carry a person. But yes, she'll be mine."

"She? How do you know it won't be a boy?"

"I'm asking Daddy God to make it a girl," said Pearl.

Xi didn't say anything for a minute. "Really? You can ask God stuff like that, and He won't think you're stupid?"

"Queen Mother says God says to ask Him for stuff, and to be bold. He always knows what's best for us, and sometimes we can ask wrong. But He is our dear Daddy--when we know His Son, Jesus--and He loves to bless us. Besides, what's wrong with me asking for it to be a girl?"

"Nothing, I guess," Xi said. "I'm just trying to understand all this."

Pearl pulled the blanket toward them. "Wanna take a short nap first? We can listen to the water, and can usually hear God better when we're quiet, Queen Mother says."

"Okay, I guess," Xi replied.

Pearl rolled up part of the blanket for a pillow, and they lay back and rested against it. Light came through in tiny slivers, and made rainbows arc from the CDs she had hung on different limbs to reflect the light and keep crows away. Daddy God, Pearl thought, please give Xi peace about her mom. I know you've got it all worked out.

They dozed a few minutes, then Xi sat up suddenly and said, "Okay, Pearl, are you sure you want to do this?" She sounded very uncomfortable. "It's kind of a trashy place. And I have no idea what creeps will be over there."

Gee, Xi is really nervous, Pearl thought. "Hey, let's go in the house and play a board game, okay?"

“Oh that’s right, you don’t play video games,” Xi said. “I have a few on my phone, but I haven’t felt like playing them much lately.”

“Sometimes Queen Mother lets us play a couple on the computer sometimes," Pearl said. "They are usually educational though, which are the most fun to me. I like to learn things while I have fun,” Pearl said.

They climbed down the ladder and went in the house. Xi was mumbling something under her breath.

When they got into the bedroom, Pearl said, "Xi, you have forgiven your mom, right? And, we could ask Uncle Burt to go with us if we need to. He was a cop, you know."

"Yeah, well that would probably freak her out if she knew that!" Xi said, scowling. "Not to mention the people she calls 'friends' that she lets hang around, or used to. I don't know. Maybe he could drive by or something. That should make any bad guys nervous--or curious."

She shook her head. "If you want, we can just stay outside. In fact, that would probably be best. I haven't been there in a month to clean the place!"

She stomped the front of her running shoe in the carpet. "I can't believe I'm going to visit her, after she threw me out! But I've had such a better life with you guys....."

A tear rolled down her cheek and she wiped it away, angrily.

"Remember, it's Thanksgiving week, and all things work together---" Pearl started, then stopped when she saw the scowl on Xi's face.

Help me say the right things, LORD! Pearl prayed. She stopped talking and went over and hugged her friend.

"You can do this, Xi. Jesus is The Man, and He will help you. He's helping me stop missing Daddy so much."

"Oh yeah," Xi said, "Whatever....sorry. Your dad died and it's kinda like my mom did too. My mom said dad died in jail when I was really little, for hard drugs, I think. I don't know. I guess that's the truth! I don't know!" She slammed the pillow down on the bed.

"Xi, Daddy God is the best Daddy, even better than mine! You just need to ask His Son into your heart—“

"How are my girls?" said Pearl's mother quietly, as she came in the room.

"Well--" Pearl said.

"We’re good!" Xi said, trying to sound cheerful. "You don't care if I take Pearl with me to visit my mom, do you, Mrs. Williams? She says she wants to. I told her I'm not sure who or what will be over there, but I really don't want to go by myself. I'm only doing this because you and Mrs. Hope said I should."

She looked confused. "I don't even know what I'm going to say---'Happy Thanksgiving, thanks for ruining my life,' I guess! But I suppose that would be rude!" She sat down on the bed and punched a pillow.

"It's all right, dear heart," Pearl's mother said. "Jesus understands. He is with you and He will help you."

She sat down next to Xi. "You are doing a very hard thing, but it's right. I want Pearl's uncle to take you, though. He used to be a police officer, and if there are rude people over there, he knows how to take care of them."

Xi nodded, but didn't say anything. "Whatever the case, she is your mother. We may not like some things, and some things we can't change. But God is with us, wherever we are, and He always helps us get through. He loves us so much!" She hugged Xi.

"There's also a very powerful verse in Psalm 27:10, where God says, ‘Although my father and my mother have forsaken me, yet the Lord will take me up adopt me as His child.’"

"The LORD always means what He says," Pearl's mother said.

I felt the power of God when she said that! thought Pearl.

"Wow!" said Xi. "I got goosebumps when you talked!"

"That's the Presence of God, the Holy Spirit," said Pearl's mother. "He is always with us, and when we praise Him and speak His Word, we can often sense how close He is! Sometimes, though, we don't need to say much. I'm learning that." She hugged Xi.

I love her so much! thought Pearl. Thank You God for giving me such a great mother who loves You and others, and forgive me for being grumpy about her sometimes!

Pearl hugged Xi from the other side. A P.O.W.E.R. Princess helps turn sad things around, she heard in her heart.

Pearl motioned to her mother to hug Xi again. Together, they hugged her snugly between them. "Hey!" Pearl said, "It's a Xiomara sandwich!"

One corner of Xi's mouth turned up.

I think she's sort of smiling! Pearl thought. Maybe I can get her to laugh! She took a pillow and put it on Xi's head. "How about a giant marshmallow for topping?"

They all laughed. Then Pearl started lightly tickling Xi in the ribs.

"Stop, Pearl, that tickles!" said Xi, between giggles. "But it's great!" She started laughing, then more and more. "I haven't laughed this hard in ages!" Tears were streaming down her face.

This time they are happy tears, thought Pearl. Thank You, Jesus! Pearl tickled her a bit more, then patted Xi on the shoulder. "I love you, my friend," she said.

Pearl's mother put her hand on Xi's back. Her lips were moving as she prayed quietly. They felt Xi relax, and helped her lie on the bed. They spread a light blanket over her and walked quietly to the door.

"Thanks," Xi said, almost in a whisper. Pearl made the "I love you" sign with her hand to Xi. "Love you, Sweet Xi," Pearl's mother said.. "Rest well, and I'll get you up for dinner."

She turned out the light and shut the door softly. Pearl followed her mother out the door. "Thank You, Precious. You truly are a jewel! Now, how about some organic ice cream before your nap?"

"Yes ma'am!" said Pearl. "All this heart-work I've been doing the past few days has made me hungry!”

She smiled. "Good one, my clever girl!" her mother said. "Heart-work indeed!"

Pearl and her mother walked down the stairs together, holding hands.

A merry heart doeth good like a medicine, Pearl heard deep within. Yes, LORD, thank You that You are healing Xi's broken heart. And Queen Mother's. And Robert’s. And mine!
