THE DAWDLE BOOK: Interactive, rhyming story for ages 3-7

by linzy bruno
10/23/2021 / Short Stories

Sometimes I don't do what I'm supposed to,
which means I dawdle awhile.
Then, when I finally get to work,
I wear a great big smile.

I know everyone does this;
young and old alike,
in everything from writing a story, to riding a bike.

So now I'll tell you a story
that really dawdles a lot.
Come along with me into storyland
and I'll show you what I've got (and don't got!)

Come on over to my house and
I'll show you inside and out.
We live on a farm
and it's a good place to show you what dawdling's all about!

First come into my living room
and while I write,
look at this perfect square,
with sides to the left and right.

Then come into my kitchen,
on the counter there are some pears,
but look closely, they have curves,
not sides like the squares.

Now come into my bathroom,
look at these nice circles
with their stripes that are
bright green and dark purple.

Now come into my kid's room.
Can you find a triangle with sides that slant?

Come outside and take a look at this rooster
who can cock-a-doodle do and this chicken who can't!

If you come back inside
you will find a TV over there on a stand.
You can watch a few shows
while I try to get this silly story planned.

Or I'll introduce you to someone else
who dawdles over there by the bed.
She's been waiting so long for her bedtime story;
standing on her head!

I guess I better get it finished
so she can get to sleep.
I really doubt she'll settle for some old nursery rhyme
like "Little Bo Peep."

Then the morning comes and I tell her,
"Yes, you look pretty in pink,
but you're wasting your time talking
with your toothbrush on the sink!"

I know it's hard; she can't help but dawdle
getting ready for school,
but maybe if she's gets up sooner,
she can follow the rules.....
and here they are:
everyday get up at six,
eat and brush your teeth, so fine,
get dressed, go outside
and you will be on time.

Because my darling daughter,
it's okay to dawdle,
but just don't miss the bus!
