Why Do We Give?

by PamFord Davis

You can be blessed.

“And remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive (Acts 20:35 NKJV).”

Christmas is the season of giving.

We make out lists of immediate family and friends and often make note of acquaintances too. As givers, we have varied reasons for including people on our gift lifts. Do we give out of love or obligation?

What’s the motive?

The early church gave generously.

Christians gave with love for their LORD and love for the brethren.

“Now the multitude of those who believed were of one heart and one soul; neither did anyone say that any of the things he possessed was his own, but they had all things in common.  And with great power the apostles gave witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And great grace was upon them all. Nor was there anyone among them who lacked; for all who were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the proceeds of the things that were sold,  and laid them at the apostles’ feet; and they distributed to each as anyone had need (Acts 4:32-35 NKJV).”

Today, our local churches serve as ‘distribution centers.’ Members give their tithes and offerings to grow God’s kingdom and to help the needy. Some money is distributed nearby; yet, designated funds meet needs in their state, nation and abroad in mission fields.

Why do we give?

We love our King.

“And the King will answer and say to them, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me (Matthew 25:40 NKJV).”
