My Pen pal

by PamFord Davis
1/25/2022 / Devotionals

Not many of us write personal letters anymore. Email, text, Messenger and video chat have taken the place of stationary and ink pens. Today’s communication is convenient and fast but I miss the writing and receiving of hand written letters. For years I anticipated the arrival of letters from family and close friends. Looking back to childhood, one friend was a Pen pal.

Our correspondence began with a school homework assignment. My memory is vague as to our relationship; I wish I could remember more. The Pen pal lived in England and I believe there might have been a connection to someone Dad had met there. He served in the Army in London during WWII.

If only I’d stay connected to my pen-pal...

Mom had a Pen pal too. The lady was the widow of Dad’s best Army buddy who died in the Battle of the Bulge. They met face-to-face in Illinois twenty years after writing their first mail box memories.

Apostle Paul had close relationships with individuals and churches. He penned many letters and we are blessed by reading them in the New Testament. He shared his heart in a letter to the church in Philippi.

“For God is my witness, how I long for you all with the affection of Christ Jesus. And this I pray, that your love may overflow still more and more in real knowledge and all discernment, so that you may discover the things that are excellent, that you may be sincere and blameless for the day of Christ; having been filled with the fruit of righteousness which comes through Jesus Christ, for the glory and praise of God (Philippians 1:8-11 NASB).”

Paul closed his letter with a personal blessing.

“The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit (Philippians 4:23 NASB).”
