9 Quick Strategies to Help Your English Students Gain Ground in Reading

19 And the king conversed with them, and among them all none was found like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah; therefore they were assigned to stand before the king. 20 And in all matters of wisdom and understanding concerning which the king asked them, he found them ten times better than all the [learned] magicians and enchanters who were in his whole realm.--Daniel 1:19-20, AMPC

These strategies are interesting for you and your students, to help them gain skills and confidence in reading--which will inherently help their spelling and writing too!

I have used these strategies for years, in public schools, homeschool, and in online teaching, to increase and strengthen comprehension and memory in my reading/ELA (English Language Arts) students: 

• SQ3R methods (Skim/Questions/Diagrams-Pictures-Bold/Read whole thing)
• mind-mapping;
• rephrasing/retelling;
• write from props (3D, and pictures, etc.)
• find-the-mistakes;
• mad libs/silly stories;
• tongue twisters;
• animal jokes, etc..
• Have them read texts at varying levels to reaffirm his current abilities, and challenge him to grow. Find subjects they are interested in, but also some that they may not be. Compare their ability to remember details of those they are interested in to those they are not.

Remember to encourage them by telling them often that you believe in them, love them, are praying for them (I've told many children, especially in public schools, that I pray for them. I don't remember one of them acting weird about it; they seemed glad! I've also told many I love them. I only had one sixth grade boy act weird about it, and I explained that it was the love of GOD, not what the world says it is!)--and that you know they will get this and go on to do great things! 

These things will help them flourish and remember God in you through the decades! Amen!
