Early Will I Seek Thee

by Dale Buchanan
4/04/2022 / Devotionals

O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is. To see thy power and thy glory, so as I have seen thee in the sanctuary.” Psalm 63:1,2

It’s dark outside. No one else in the house is up and around. There are no distractions. Whether during the heat of summer or the cold of winter, early is a special time to seek the Lord.

Jesus prayed early in the morning. And in the morning, rising up a great while before day, he went out, and departed into a solitary place, and there prayed.” Even though Jesus is God in the flesh, He needed, and wanted, time alone with His Father. What an example to follow!

Did anybody but Jesus do this? David: “Evening, and morning, and at noon, will I pray, and cry aloud: and he shall hear my voice.” (Ps. 56:17) Daniel: prayed three times a day – (Dan. 6:10)

Jesus prayed all night as he prepared to choose his twelve apostles. (Luke 6:12-13)

Although there are no direct commands from the Lord to pray at a certain time of day, this is a good rule to follow: Early will I seek thee. I need to pray early: before I start a new day; before I make a decision; before I begin a romantic relationship; before I discipline my children; before I decide on how to solve a problem; before I go to public worship; before I minister to others. I Thessalonians 5:17 says, “Pray without ceasing.” We always need God’s wisdom for every task, every problem we face. And James 1:5 says, “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God.” Pray and determine, Early Will I seek thee.”
