The Gift of Repentance

by Tonja Taylor
4/13/2022 / Christian Living

As true Believers who have received what the LORD Jesus Christ did for us on the cross--shedding His pure blood so we could be forgiven (John 3:15-17!--we have the priceless gift of repentance!

Hallelujah!

God makes things easy for us. He loves us and is on our side. He wants us to win, and He's done everything He can to help us--including give us the gift of repentance!

What is "repentance"? At its simplest form, it's asking for forgiveness of a wrong done. Just like when our children know or are told that they have broken a rule or otherwise done something they shouldn't--or perhaps not done something they know to do--they apologize to us and ask us to forgive them, even though they may use different wording.

Repentance is humbling oneself to admit you are wrong in some way.

God is holy, and praise the LORD, He sent Jesus to experience all the emotions and trials a human could experience--but He never sinned (including with wrong relationships!)--but took on Himself on the cross all the junk. He became sin--by faith. We could never understand that.

He gave us the gift of His righteousness. We can't understand that either, but we can choose to believe and receive it. That's faith--bypassing the mind to let your heart, your spirit, believe anyway!

So, as the Word says, God is good, and forgives us and cleanses us from all unrighteousness, when we truly repent to Him.

Wow! How good and great is our awesome God Who is Love (I John 4:8)!

Here are steps to repent:

1. Tell the LORD you know that, as I John 5:14-15 says, when we pray in His will, we know that He hears us, and we have what we ask. Thank Him that He hears you.

2. Ask Him to reveal to you what you need to repent for, if you don't already know. I don't mean we sin every day. We can live so closely to Him that we don't sin every day, but there are always things we can correct to be even more like Him, even if they are not sin.

3. Repent for what you know, and then for whatever else He shows you.

4. Ask Him to help you continue to love and live His Word, and be more like Him.

5. Tell Him you receive His cleansing and thank Him for it.

6. Remember to forgive yourself--which is something it took me decades to learn. If the LORD of Heaven and earth does not hold your sins against you, then who are you to condemn yourself? The devil is condemned, and we who are in Christ Jesus are righteous, by His blood only--but that is everything!

7. Rejoice and continue to draw close to Him. The more you live like Him, the more you will enjoy life and draw others to Him!
