PIANO LESSONS (excerpt) - Christmas Communion and Healing

by Tonja Taylor
4/17/2022 / Short Stories

The candlelight graced the large room, as an instrumental version of  "What Child is This?" played in  background. Some people were singing softly, and Rebecca and Zoe joined in, along with the rest of the group, except for Eva.

Wow, God, You really can do anything! thought Rebecca. I can't believe I invited Eva--or that she came! But here she is! So please do big things and reveal Yourself to her--and this whole group. That will be the best Christmas present for us all! she prayed.

Zoe sang the loudest.

She's offkey, but she's so adorable, and earnest! Rebecca thought, and smiled.

Seth, on her left side, smiled at her, looking at Zoe and looking back at her.

He's even more handsome in the candelight, thought Rebecca. I'm so glad he came, but LORD, his heart probably needs healing too. Heal us all! she asked, and kept singing softly.

The music continued to play as the pastor directed the congregation to come to the front and take the cracker and little cup of grape juice for Communion.  As they returned to their chairs, Rebecca helped Zoe open hers.

The music became very faint, and the pastor read from Luke 22, where Jesus the Lord ate the Last Supper with His disciples.  Then he was quiet, and had all bow their heads. As he prayed, Rebecca heard someone crying quietly.

She was holding Zoe's hand. I know it's not Miss Precious, so who is it?  She opened her eyes and could see Zoe looking at Eva, who was on the other side of John.

As the pastor led everyone to eat the cracker, Eva started crying louder, and a few people started looking at her.

"Becca, what should we do?" whispered Zoe loudly.

Rebecca put her finger to her lips and pointed at the cup in her hand. "Wait," she mouthed silently. Zoe nodded.

As soon as the pastor had everyone drink the cup, Eva burst out in sobs, and then dropped to the  floor on her knees. "I'm so sorry, Jesus!" she said loudly, between sobs. "Please forgive me!"

Now, several people were looking at Eva, and Rebecca was a little embarrassed. At least she's a few people away from me. I should have known there'd be trouble with her, she thought. Why in the world did I bring her anyway? But the LORD helped me to covercome to be able to forgive her--that's for sure!

Some of the people around Eva were patting her and trying to quietly help her up. The pastor motioned for the worship team to play. Soon, the notes to "O Holy Night," was flowing

John looked at Seth and shook his head a little bit, then just stared straight ahead, ignoring Eva.

Seth looked compassionately sad. He smiled and leaned over and whispered something to John.

John seems frozen, Rebecca thought, a little amused. He probably has no clue what to do. I'm actually suprised he came! But God can do anything. She smiled at Seth. He is so wonderful...I'm sure he's giving John some good advice. I apologize, Lord, I know I shouldn't be happy at Eva's discomfort. I just wonder if it's an act. I'd like to trust her, but...

"Becca!" Zoe said, sounding happy as she whispered. Rebecca bent down to hear better.

"God is healing everybody's hearts! He is so good--He gives gifts to everyone!"

"You are right, little Z! Pray for God to do all He needs to do for everyone here, OK?'

Zoe nodded. "Yes ma'am!" she whispered loudly again, and bowed her head of dark brown curls.

Thank You, Jesus, for this shining jewel! Rebecca thought, and caressed Little Z's hair. Then she started praying in tongues, as most of the congregation sang the song.

Suddenly, Zoe pulled her hand out of Rebecca's and scooted by Seth then John, Eva had quieted down, but was still kneeled by her chair. Her long blonde hair covered her face.

Zoe hugged Eva's back, then put her hand on the woman's shoulder. She prayed, "Jesus, You are the Healer and Forgiver and Restorer, like Becca says. Thank You that You are healing Ms. Eva's hearts--and all of ours!"

Eva started crying again, but this time, it sounded sweeter.

Wow, out of the mouths of babes! thought Rebecca. Zoe is wiser than us all!

She looked at Seth, and they smiled at each other.

Then, they watched as Zoe tapped Eva's shoulder, and had Eva look at her. "Ms. Eva, God says where sin did abound, His Grace does much more abound! Jesus has lots of Grace for you!"

Eva just stared at her, smiled really big, and burst into tears again, but this time they seemed happy.  She hugged Zoe and held her several seconds.

John, whose face had softened, helped Eva up.

Eva sat in her chair, and said, "Zoe, I want a daughter just like you!"

"Well, Becca's my godmother, and she told me all this. You'll have to tell your daughter this stuff!"

"You are right!" Eva said. She leaned forward, and smiled and waved at Becca. "Thank you so much, Rebecca! You're an awesome lady!"

Rebecca shook her head. "No, I'm not," she said, feeling a new warmth in her heart for Eva, "but God is Love, and He is awesome!"

"Merry Christmas!" Zoe said. "Jesus loves us all, and that is our Gift!"
