Fixin' To Get My Fix!

by LauraLee Shaw
11/07/2007 / Devotionals

"Let your eyes look straight ahead,
Fix your gaze directly before you."
Proverbs 4:25

I'm convinced lately that I'm losing my marbles! It's difficult to focus on all the tasks around me--I'm forgetful, hazy in the brain, even a little bit lethargic from all that needs doin' not gettin' done!!!! I guess if I had to put my finger on it, I would say that I'm distracted. Can you relate to this at all?

While talking to my children about test-taking on the way to school one morning, I heard my voice talking, but I could hardly believe the words coming out of my mouth. "When you're taking a test that you're prepared for, it all comes down to focus," I rattled off to them as though I were someone with great wisdom on the subject. "You can't let anything around you distract you. You have to focus."

As I discussed the Proverb above with them, they were very open to the advice. After I dropped them off, however, my Father used my words to them to minister to me. He knew I so desperately needed a lesson on focus that day, because I was weary of the lack of it.

He reminded me that when it comes to tasks in life that I must complete, it is best to look straight ahead. Get the work right in front of me finished without worrying about the stuff that looms behind, beside and around me. He will help me to complete each thing-a-ma-job as I fix my gaze directly before me. What practical and tangible advice from my Daddy!

He also reminded me that I need to fix my gaze on Him above. "Therefore, holy ones, who share in the heavenly calling, fix your thoughts on Jesus, the apostle and high priest whom we confess (Hebrews 3:1)."

As I do so, He will perfect my faith. "Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfector of our faith" Hebrews 12:2a

I must never let all the "stuff" around me sidetrack me from my main purpose in life, which is loving Him and knowing Him more. While many of the distractions will still be there, He will give me the positive "UMPH" to deal with each as they come, in the right way and in His appropriate time.

When was the last time you purposefully fixed your thoughts on Jesus?

Spend a moment pondering over Him today, and while you're at it, open His Word and let Him speak a thing or two to you. You will walk away knowing Him better and focusing more clearly on that which matters to Him. Your distractions will fade into the background as you see His face in front of you. Take hold and grab your perfect fix today!
