It Doesn't Make Sense!

by LaNaye Perkins
11/08/2007 / Short Stories

Lisa moaned and slowly opened her eyes. Her head was throbbing with sharp stabbing pain on the right side. As her vision began to focus, she wondered where she was. Nothing looked familiar to her, everything was rubble and the air was thick with dust. Fear made the hair on the back of her neck stand up as she broke out in a cold sweat. Lifting her hand to brush back her hair, she felt a warm sticky fluid on the side of her head. She knew it was blood as she could already smell its coppery scent. It took great effort to push herself up and slowly stand. She had to lean back against a brick building in order to gain her balance. Its texture was rough, yet somehow comforting with its solid presence. She felt dizzy and walking was difficult as she tried to make her way down the remnants of a sidewalk.

She was overwhelmed by the scene that surrounded her. People were scattered all around, some moaning and slowly coming around; others would never wake again. Security alarms were ringing and sirens were blaring. Firemen and policemen rushed about trying to locate and assist the wounded. Others who had escaped injury, or were only slightly wounded were frantically searching for loved ones and survivors. She could hear bits and pieces of their conversations.

"Joe, bring a stretcher quick, this one is still alive!" one fireman yelled.

"Help me please, somebody help me!" an elderly gentleman cried as he tried to get help for his unconscious wife.

"My baby! Where is my baby?" a frantic young mother screamed as she dug through the rubble of what once was a store. It was closely followed by her anguished cry when she'd found his lifeless body.

"These folks didn't make it, Mike. " said a police officer just in front of her. "Do you have something I can use to cover them up?"

Looking down, Lisa felt sick as she saw the mangled remains of what used to be people. All around her was a carnage she hoped she could forget. What happened? How did I get here? Nothing looks familiar. Why can't I remember anything? She slowly sank to her knees as blackness began to overcome her.

"Get a paramedic over here quick! Come on lady, try to stay with me!" Lisa heard the policeman pleading with her as unconsciousness embraced her once more.

"We're losing her! Hurry and get the crash cart in here!" were the last words she heard.

Lisa felt herself floating upward toward a beautiful light. She was surrounded by magnificent warrior angels in garments of glorious white and gold. Beside her was her Savior, who firmly clasped her hand as they soared through time and space toward heaven. The carnage below forever erased from her memory as she soared into eternity with triumphant and joyful praise for Christ her king.

"How can she look so happy when she had such a horrible death? It doesn't make sense. " The confused doctor who'd worked so frantically to save Lisa, spoke softly as he gently closed her lifeless eyes before walking from the room.

Standing by the doorway was a kindly minister, a knowing smile spreading across his lips and into his eyes. "I believe I can explain." he stated as the two walked down the hallway.
