Made Straight

by PamFord Davis

Potholes and ruts are like bad weather; complaining doesn’t change the situation.

Living in the Deep South (and from the North East) I’m accustomed to roads with potholes. Back in Central NY State, heavy traffic on highways and salt on winter roads left evidence of road damage.

Here in Louisiana, heavy farm trucks ruin paved roads.

Though a distant memory, I recall local road crews re-paving and leveling out our country road. For a time, the rough road was made smooth. We enjoyed the drive to and from home.

Jesus birth was foretold. God would send someone to prepare the way.

“A voice cries:
In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord;
make straight in the desert a highway for our God.
Every valley shall be lifted up,
and every mountain and hill be made low;
the uneven ground shall become level,
and the rough places a plain.
And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed,
and all flesh shall see it together,
for the mouth of the Lord has spoken (Isaiah 40:3-5 ESV).”

I’ve heard that in Bible times great preparations were made in anticipation of a visiting Kings. Roads were smoothed out and made straight before their expected arrival.

John the Baptist prepared the way for Jesus; He is King of Kings.

“In those days John the Baptist came preaching in the wilderness of Judea, ‘Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.’ For this is he who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah when he said,

‘The voice of one crying in the wilderness:
‘Prepare the way of the Lord;
make his paths straight (Matthew 3:1-3 ESV).’”
