Handwriting On The Ground

by Olawale Ogunsola

Writing is of great value to mankind. Otherwise, the 'volume' of development that has taken place would have become little or impossible. The roles of writing cannot be overstressed. This is not the direct focus of this piece but to call your attention to how valuable it is. Beloved, have you heard the expression, 'Handwriting on the wall'? A site defines it as ' The very apparent signs that something bad will happen in the future.' This phrase comes from the Biblical story of Daniel in which the Prophet interprets some mysterious writing that a disembodied hand has inscribed on the palace wall, telling King Belshazzar that he will be overthrown, ( Daniel 5:2-30). This story is very familiar with the Saints of Christ and others who do not know the Lord. Many come across it in History books. That is not a problem at all so long the story reveals the truth of the phrase. Now, do you know that there is an equivalent writing only familiar with people who love the Lord and read the Holy Scriptures? Yes, there is! It is not impossible that those who read the Holy Bible come across the phrase, 'But Jesus... wrote on the ground...' (John 8:6,8). What led to this action in the first place? A group of religious people in Christ days 'arrested' a woman when she was in the act of committing adultery and they brought her to Jesus Christ that they may entangle Him in His words. This people who were harmed with stones to kill the woman as soon as they heard the Lord's declaration on her because Moses' laws permitted them to stone her to death. Jesus Christ heard them but took His time to give an answer. It was during this time that the Holy Bible records, ' But Jesus stooped down and wrote on the ground with His finger, as though He did not hear.' John 8:6(b).New King James Version (NKJV). Those people persisted on knowing what Jesus commandment was. The Holy Bible records His answer thus, ' He who is without sin among you, let him throw a stone at her first.' verse 7(c). After this declaration, in verse eight, ' And again He stooped down and wrote on the ground.' the question now is 'Why?' People asked Jesus a question but He chose to 'write on the ground.' Before answering the question, .'Why?' Let us read how New Living Translation render verses six and eight, '...but Jesus stooped down and wrote in the dust with his finger.' vs 6(!b). 'Then he stooped down again and wrote in the dust', verse 8. What NKJV translates 'ground', NLT calls 'dust'. Therefore, we can use the two words interchangeably or as synonyms. Now, let us go back to the time of Creation, the Holy Scriptures reveal ' And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.'' Genesis 2:7. NKJV. After the fall of man, the final of the judgments delivered on mankind remains, 'In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread Till you return to the ground, For out of it you were taken; For dust you are, And to dust you shall return.' Genesis 3:19. Now,is there any correlation between the two, mankind taken from the dust and Jesus writing on the dust? Yes, there is! Because Jesus has been given all power in Heaven and on Earth, He can do anything He wants to do. His writing on the ground (dust) is as good as writing well on the tablets of hearts of all those accusing the woman of adultery. His writing reminded them of their own faults, weaknesses, imperfections and sins, after telling them, 'He who is without sin among you, let him throw a stone first.' verse 8. It worked well! Each of the religious people who knew how to apply the laws to judge others turned a searchlight on themselves as the Lord wrote on the tablets of their hearts. Realising that they were as guilty as the woman accused of adultery, no one could throw the first stone. The word of God works here as contained in Hebrews 8:10, ' I will put My laws in their mind and write them on their hearts, and I will be their God, and they shall be My people'. The Magicians in Egypt appreciate the finger of God when it troubled them. They knew there is nothing the finger of God cannot do, Exodus 8:18-19. Therefore, let the finger of the Lord write on the tablet of your heart that you may search your life to rid it of any sin. The Lord will surely help you. NOTE FOR SALVATION The Father loveth the Son, and hath given all things into his hand. He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him. John 3::35-36. Therefore, believe the Lord Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior. Stay blessed and prepared for the imminent coming of the Lord, Jesus Christ.
