P.O.W.E.R.* Girl III - Ch. 10 - New Clothes

Pearl went into the bathroom, and heard someone grumbling. As she was washing her hands, Xi came out. She was scowling.

Gee, this should be a happy time for everybody! thought Pearl. “What’s the deal, Xi?”

“I just need to know what you folks really mean!” she said. “I thought the ‘tacky sweater’ contest meant we were supposed to have sweaters that were not all pretty and prissy, like the one that won!” She washed her hands, and snatched the paper towel out of the holder. “I think some of the kids were talking about you and me.”

“Yeah, I gotcha,” said Pearl. “Me too! But it was fun anyway, and maybe the little girl that won needed to get a prize or something,” said Pearl. Queen Mother says we’ll never understand everything, but we know God loves us all, and we have to trust Him.”

Xi stared at her. “Do you people mean what you say, or not?” she asked, then stomped out of the restroom.

Lord, help her let it go! Pearl thought. And help us to really speak truth, like Queen Mother says!

They loaded into their vehicles to return home. Xi sat in stone silence, shades on, earbuds in.

I bet she’s listening to that angry music again, thought Pearl. OK, Lord, help me to help us all think positive.

“Wow, that was such a great meal!” said Pearl, “And the white elephant gift exchange was fun, too,” she said, and smiled.

“Yeah, I enjoy that,” said Robin. “You never know what you’re gonna get!”

“I think the person that got my drawing of the ram really liked it, but it was supposed to be funny—you know, this fat, cocky little ram, who thought he was a warhorse or something.”

“Who?” said Xi, still not moving. “Anyway, the ram is cool. You’re a pretty good artist,” she said,” as if trying to sound nice.

Thank You, Lord, thought Pearl, you’re helping her. “I need to get you to help me draw better. You are really good, Xi!” said Pearl. Maybe she will start drawing and painting for You!

“I have another idea about the ram thing, said Pearl“I could make it R.A.M., for “Revelation of I Am”—and have him speak or write the Word—”

“Not my area!” said Xi. “Talk to your mom about it, or something.”

“That would be neat!” said Robin. “Do it!”

“Well, would you please give me a few tips on drawing and painting soon, Xi?” Pearl asked. “Please?”

“Sure, maybe for your Christmas present,” said Xi. “I don’t know what to get you anyway.”

“No worries, Dear,” said Pearl’s mother. “We are drawing names. That way, no one will have to spend a lot of money. We all have so much already!”

“Amen!” said Pearl and Robin in unison.

“Yeah…” said Xi.

They dropped Risa and her kids off at their house, then returned home to change clothes.

Burt had a washcloth and was applying it to Robert’s face. “He really enjoyed the chocolate today!” said Burt. “OK, Bub, your face is finally clean. Now brush your teeth, and I’ll help you dress up for the special time at church tonight.”

I hope he acts right! thought Pearl, as she put her purse down.

“Yeah! Chocolate was the best part!” said Robert. “Will we have chocolate tonight?”

Burt laughed. “No, but we’ll have some special Jesus music, and we’ll take Communion.”

“That will be the best part, Son,” said his mother. “The presence of the Lord. Perhaps you’ll feel His Spirit.”

Yeah, he needs to get saved! Thought Pearl. Then he should act better!

“Help me get dressed, Uncle Burt! And you can watch me brush my teeth!”

His uncle rose. “All right, duty calls.” He looked at his watch. “Ladies, can you be ready in 10 minutes?”

“I’m ready now,” said Xi.

“Sweetie,” said Pearl’s mother softly, “Would you please wear that new blouse we bought you the other day? It looks very nice on you.”

Xi looked down at her tie-dyed Tshirt. She looked embarrassed, then said, "Sure, Mrs. Williams. I will,” said Xi. “You guys are so nice to buy me things.”

I’m so glad she didn’t sound grumpy! thought Pearl. LORD, I pray You’d help Xi realize You have more new clothes for her—especially the Robe of Righteousness!
