P.O.W.E.R.* Girl III - Ch. 18 - Dancing On Ice

“So Robert and Lucas won’t be with us tonight?” said Pearl, trying to break the silence on the way home from the jail.

“Rico is going to have them over,” Risa said. “He hasn’t seen Lucas in a while, and he will be good with Robert.”

Thank You, LORD! thought Pearl.  “Isn’t that great?” she said, touching Xi’s leg. We can enjoy the performance, then!

Xi didn’t respond. She was leaning back; arms crossed, shades on, earbuds in. Pearl could hear a few sounds from Xi’s phone.

Loud music kills the pain—kind of, Pearl thought, like when I’ve needed to blast praise and worship when my heart hurts!

She saw a tear slide down Xi’s cheek. Still, Xi didn’t move.  But God’s in my music, thought Pearl. Dear Jesus, please give her peace and heal her heart, and help her get rid of the junky stuff!

“So what are we going to see?” asked Robin.

“The Nutcracker, I think,” said Pearl. “Some kind of Christmas thing.”

“Enjoy,” said Xi, in a very low voice.

“Oh, Xi, you’re coming with us!” said Pearl. “Queen Mother—”

“Nope,” interrupted Xi. “Not gonna happen. I have stuff to do.”

“Like what?” Pearl said. ‘Mrs. Sophia is taking us, and even Uncle Burt is going. If my big-bear uncle can go to a ballet thingie, then you can too!”

Burt laughed loudly. “She’s got a point there, girlie!”

“Mr. Williams, I need time to myself,” said Xi.

“Sweetie,” said Risa softly, “what you actually need is a fun night out, and, of course, we are the best company!”

Xi sighed. “You people are always ganging up on me!”

“Hey!” Pearl said, seeing some decorations lit up. “Look at that huge JOY sign!” she said, poking Xi. “See the Nativity—Mary and Joseph and Baby Jesus?"

“Yeah, great,” Xi said, but didn’t move or look.

No one said anything for a few seconds. Then, Burt said, “Well, my favorite restaurant is open 24/7, and they have the most delicious omelets and gourmet hot chocolate with fresh whipped cream and cinnamon. Do you think you could suffer through the ballet to get to the food after?”

Pearl saw one corner of Xi’s mouth turn up. “Since you put it that way….I haven’t had great hot chocolate for a while. I guess ‘tis the Season, huh?”

“Better than bowling!” said Pearl.

“Bowling?” Xi said. “I can bowl, kinda. Not much, though."

Risa laughed. “Yes, we were a little amused and confused at first, when we thought Ms. Sophia said she was taking us bowling!

“Yeah,” Pearl said, and giggled. “When I asked her about it, Mrs. Sophia said, ‘No!  mean the dancers on ice---you know, like they are flying above it—’ and I was like, Oh, you mean ballet on ice!  And she said, ‘Si, the St. Petersburg Russian Ballet!’ So I was glad about that, and then she shook her head and said, ‘No, no bowling—unless Todopoderoso commands it!’”

Pearl laughed again. “That’s a cool word, so I asked her what it meant, and she said it means ‘God Almighty,’ then she said, ‘Todopoderoso es muy generoso!’ and explained that God is very generous! So I just hugged her and told her Gracias!”

“Cool,” said Xi. “But I’d rather go bowling. I’m not into ballet.”

“It’ll be good,” said Pearl. “You can handle it!”

“Yes, we’ll get a little culture,” said Burt. “You may even like it!”

Robin nodded. “Ballet on ice is different. It’s much more exciting than the regular stuff! The costumes are beautiful, and the music is the best.”

“Have you been to one?” Pearl asked her.

“No, but we saw a video clip in our school arts and services club last year, so the real thing has got to be better!” Robin said.

Ooh, fun! thought Pearl. I want to do that club!

They got home, and Robert met them at the door. He had a big smile. “Hey! Uncle Rico said he would play with me and Lucas tonight! He’s going to take us to his pond, and let us play with his remote control boats! He says they have lights on them and everything, and we can race them!”

Lucas walked up. “Well, the sailboat may not win, but it’ll be fun,” he said.

Pearl dashed by Robert. “We need to change clothes and get ready to go, ‘cause we need to get Ms. Sophia,” she said. “Where Queen Mother?”

“Getting ready, I bet,” said Risa.  “I’ll go to the back bathroom, and I’m sure Rico will be here in a bit.” She walked toward the back.

“Risa!” said Pearl’s mother, emerging from her bedroom. “Would you help me with this zipper?”

“Wow, Queen Mother, you look gorgeous!” Pearl said.

“Right!” Xi said. “Great color, Mrs. Williams!”

“Thank you, guys,” she said. “It’s been a while since I’ve been to a cultural event, so I thought I’d do a little extra.”

“Very nice,” said Robin.

Thank You, Lord, that Queen Mother is getting into this, thought Pearl. Help her to just relax and enjoy the show, with Robert not here!

The doorbell rang, and there was Rico. “Ready boys?” he said. “We have a lot of fun to do, with boat races and pizza—”

“Pizza! Yeah!” said Robert. “Let’s go!” He hugged his uncle’s leg and grabbed Rico’s hand.

“Well,” said his mother. “No problem there! Perhaps he’ll remember my name when he comes back!”

“It’ll do his little heart good,” said Burt. “He’d be bored anyway.”

“God is good!” said Pearl. “He always provides!” Especially people to take care of Robert! she thought.

“Amen!” said her mother. “He is faithful!”
