Jesus' Mother Mary Was An Intercessor

by Tonja Taylor

Jesus' mother, Mary, was an intercessor!

It makes sense that the chosen mother of the Son of God, the LORD Jesus Christ, would intercede for others, but it never occurred to me until I saw episode five of season one of "The Chosen" series.

"Intercession" is speaking up for others, which the Bible often tells us to do. It doesn't have to be in a formal posture, or with formal words, although there is certainly a time and place for that--with the LORD, with natural government, with people we know personally, etc.

Mary was the only one who could have done served effectively in the situation where the wine ran out at the wedding at Cana (which would have caused great embarrassment to the wedding couple and their families).

When she spoke to Jesus, knowing that He was the only One Who could solve the problem, she was interceding.

He told her politely that it was not His time (for public miracles), yet (in The Chosen series), she said, "If not now, when?"

Her determined faith and boldness to intercede changed history--and blessed the couple and their families.

On the third day there was a wedding at Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus also was invited with His disciples to the wedding. And when the wine was all gone, the mother of Jesus said to Him, They have no more wine! Jesus said to her, [Dear] woman, what is that to you and to Me? [What do we have in common? Leave it to Me.] My time (hour to act) has not yet come. His mother said to the servants, Whatever He says to you, do it. 6 Now there were six waterpots of stone standing there, as the Jewish custom of purification (ceremonial washing) demanded, holding twenty to thirty gallons apiece. Jesus said to them, Fill the waterpots with water. So they filled them up to the brim. Then He said to them, Draw some out now and take it to the manager of the feast [to the one presiding, the superintendent of the banquet]. So they took him some. And when the manager tasted the water just now turned into wine, not knowing where it came from—though the servants who had drawn the water knew—he called the bridegroom 10 And said to him, Everyone else serves his best wine first, and when people have drunk freely, then he serves that which is not so good; but you have kept back the good wine until now!

11 This, the first of His signs (miracles, wonderworks), Jesus performed in Cana of Galilee, and manifested His glory [by it He displayed His greatness and His power openly], and His disciples believed in Him [adhered to, trusted in, and relied on Him].

The servants had to obey, of course, but if they hadn't, Jesus would have supplied some other way.

He--Who was and is and always will be God!--humbled Himself, trusted His Father, God, and honored His mother's intercession. It was a win-win for everyone!

What a gracious, amazing, truly awesome and forever good God we serve!

When we humble ourselves and come before the LORD of Heaven and earth on behalf of others', He is honored. He hears us. He answers (while having to work with humans' free wills, of course). He delights in our prayers that come from a heart of love for Him and others, and it is actually His Spirit influencing our spirits to stand up for others; always a win-win!

So ask Him today to show you more ways to stand up for others, which is a form of giving. You, like Mary, the mother of Jesus, will be a pleasing intercessor to Him!

If not now, when? Let's do it!
