Dominating Disappointment

by Tonja Taylor
2/06/2023 / Christian Living

1 Hear my prayer, O Lord, give ear to my supplications! In Your faithfulness answer me, and in Your righteousness. 2 And enter not into judgment with Your servant, for in Your sight no man living is [in himself] righteous or justified. 3 For the enemy has pursued and persecuted my soul, he has crushed my life down to the ground; he has made me to dwell in dark places as those who have been long dead. 4 Therefore is my spirit overwhelmed and faints within me [wrapped in gloom]; my heart within my bosom grows numb. 5 I remember the days of old; I meditate on all Your doings; I ponder the work of Your hands. 6 I spread forth my hands to You; my soul thirsts after You like a thirsty land [for water]. Selah [pause, and calmly think of that]! 7 Answer me speedily, O Lord, for my spirit fails; hide not Your face from me, lest I become like those who go down into the pit (the grave). 8 Cause me to hear Your loving-kindness in the morning, for on You do I lean and in You do I trust. Cause me to know the way wherein I should walk, for I lift up my inner self to You.--Psalm 143:1-8, A Psalm of David, AMPC

King David knew about disappointment. I've felt like he did, and I'm sure you probably have too.

Disappointment is a tool of the enemy, who is constantly trying to get our minds of our faithful, sacrificially-loving God and how much He loves us.

But as David recognized, the LORD is the answer, and it's even His loving Spirit Who helps us dominate it; to refocus on Him, and get back into peace and joy.

Every person, or at least almost every person on the planet, will be disappointed, eventually. No matter how strong a Believer in the LORD Jesus Christ and His Word that we are, disappointment--unmet expectations--are part of living in this earth.

It's because we each have a slightly (or vastly) different perspective on life, because of our varied experiences, training, values, and unique relationship with the LORD.

After dealing with decades of disappointments, many of which turned into bitterness, and even suicidal thoughts about 30 years ago, when I was in a horrible, abusive marriage that had come about in rebellion, as one who'd been born again about 15 years earlier, but not following God closely, I told the LORD something to the effect of "Take my life, LORD. I don't want to live any more."

The LORD being so very good and all-wise, and seeing the end from the beginning; the entirety of my life at once, was able to use my words to help the old me start dying. He took my life and started rebuilding it! Hallelujah!

One of the main ways He started me on the healing journey was to inspire me to get alone with Him and His Word in a quiet place, and take note cards and a pen, and open the Bible. As I gazed at the Word, I would see a Scripture, and it would bring me hope. I would write it on a note card. Then, I would gather the note cards and review them daily, sometimes more than once a day.

He was helping me sow the Word--love and light, peace and joy, hope; salvation!--into my soul (mind, will, emotions), and that literally saved my mind more than a couple of times, and started healing my life

What grace and mercy and faithfulness, and those are only three of His wonderful, eternal attributes!

The LORD has been faithful to teach me how to recognize and repent of disappointment.

Yes, I said repent, because sometimes disappointments come because of our wrong expectations of others and ourselves, and if we keep repeating past disappointments and keeping a record of wrongs (I Cor. 13:4-8) and focus on the negatives, then that can turn into bitterness, pity parties, sorrow, grief, depression, etc. None of this is from God, and all is does is steal from oneself, and usually--especially if it continues--from others. Ask me how I know!

The enemy lies to tell us that no one has ever hurt like we have, but just look to the person next to you--we all feel the same.

I'm sure the LORD Jesus, Who humbled Himself and totally entered into the human experience, was the most disappointed of all--except He knew He had to constantly and immediately refocus on the faithful love of His Father God.

Some disappointments I've experienced have taken more time to process than others. I've had to have the LORD's help to realize that, becaue of disappointments, I had turned into a judge and a scorner, and the Bible speaks against both of those.

First, only the LORD knows the heart and mind and experiences of every person, and we don't. We may think we know someone, and then when they act in a way that seems out of character (read: what we expect from them), they we can be disappointed.

The LORD is our Healer, and He heals our broken hearts and binds up our wounds.

God’s the one who rebuilds Jerusalem, who regathers Israel’s scattered exiles. He heals the  heartbroken and bandages their wounds. He counts the stars and assigns each a name. Our Lord is great, with limitless strength; we’ll never comprehend what he knows and does.  God puts the fallen on their feet again and pushes the wicked into the ditch.--Psalm 147:2-6, MSG

King David prayed against disappointment, and we can too. The secret is--and I'm still getting victory in remembering this, but the LORD is helping me--realizing that, no matter how anointed, wealthy, kind, aged, experienced, or whatever, every human is fallible, and if nothing else, just flat thinks differently than we do sometimes.

1 Unto You, O Lord, do I bring my life. 2 O my God, I trust, lean on, rely on, and am confident in You. Let me not be put to shame or [my hope in You] be disappointed; let not my enemies triumph over me. 3 Yes, let none who trust and wait hopefully and look for You be put to shame or be disappointed; let them be ashamed who forsake the right or deal treacherously without cause.  4 Show me Your ways, O Lord; teach me Your paths. 5 Guide me in Your truth and faithfulness and teach me, for You are the God of my salvation; for You [You only and altogether] do I wait [expectantly] all the day long.--Psalm 25:1-5, AMPC

We all want to be right, but there is only One Who is, and we are not Him! The Great I AM, Jehovah, our Father, is the only One Who is:  And God said unto Moses, I Am That I Am: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I Am hath sent me unto you.--Exodus 3:14, AMPC

So, the rest of us have (continual) work to do to become more like the LORD, or, rather, to yield more of our lives to Him, so He can live through us.

The healing balm(s) are the Word of God, worship, and prayer.

immediately refocusing on the LORD, Who is good all the time, faithful forever, on our side, and Who knows and truly works all things together for our best and His glory (Genesis 50:20 and Romans 8:28).

Hallelujah!

Yes, it really is that simple--and that hard, but we can ask the LORD to put His Grace all over (whatever) the situation, and He will. He will make things so much easier than they would be without His loving, merciful touch and kindness.

He will help us recognize, reject, and refute the sorrow and grief and junk that come with disappointment, and to dominate it; to refocus on Jesus Christ, our Blessed Hope, the Hope of nations, the eternal Light of Life.

Awaiting and looking for the [fulfillment, the realization of our] blessed hope, even the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Christ Jesus (the Messiah, the Anointed One), 14 Who gave Himself on our behalf that He might redeem us (purchase our freedom) from all iniquity and purify for Himself a people [to be peculiarly His own, people who are] eager and enthusiastic about [living a life that is good and filled with] beneficial deeds.--Titus 2:13-14, AMPC

God is Love (I John 4:8). One of the main ways we learn to be like Him is to yield to Him Who is Love.

4 Love endures long and is patient and kind; love never is envious nor boils over with jealousy, is not boastful or vainglorious, does not display itself haughtily. 5 It is not conceited (arrogant and inflated with pride); it is not rude (unmannerly) and does not act unbecomingly. Love (God’s love in us) does not insist on its own rights or its own way, for it is not self-seeking; it is not touchy or fretful or resentful; it takes no account of the evil done to it [it pays no attention to a suffered wrong]. 6 It does not rejoice at injustice and unrighteousness, but rejoices when right and truth prevail. 7 Love bears up under anything and everything that comes, is ever ready to believe the best of every person, its hopes are fadeless under all circumstances, and it endures everything [without weakening].--I Corinthians 13:4-7, AMPC

We cannot do this in ourselves. We just can't. Any goodness in any person, born again or not, comes from the LORD of life Who created all people. However, when we truly are born again by faith in what the blood of Jesus did at the cross over 2,000 years ago to cleanse us from our sins and make us acceptable to the holy Father, God, we want to love others the way Jesus does.

The more we learn of how much God love us--by remembering His faithfulness and His goodness to us every day, and by studying His Word, listening to Bible-based preaching and teaching, gathering at a Bible-believing church with other sincere Believers, and worshiping Him to music that truly glorifies Him--the more we will yield to Him, and be sensitive to let Him love through us.

Hallelujah!

God's plans for us are so very good (Jeremiah 29:11 and Ephesians 2:10 and 3:20)!  The LORD reminded me of this by using Jeremiah 29:11 over 25 years ago, when I was in depression from having married in rebellion, and thus suffered a horrible, strife-filled, ungodly, abusive marriage. I did not want to keep living that way, and I knew I was a Believer who had really messed up. I needed the LORD to confirm His love for me, and He did, by using this verse on a beautiful magnet with a pretty hummingbird--a free bird. I felt anything but free, and I was in much bondage. However, when I read this Scripture, the healing power of God's Word started healing my broken heart, and unlocking my strangled soul. Hallelujah!

11 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.--Jerremiah 29:11, KJV

He is utterly trustworthy--and remember (as He showed me years ago), even when we sleep, His Spirit and His holy angels are watching over and protecting us (Psalm 91)! Hallelujah!

Trust in, lean on, rely on, and have confidence in Him at all times, you people; pour out your  hearts before Him. God is a refuge for us (a fortress and a high tower). Selah [pause, and calmly think of that]!--Psalm 62:8, AMPC

So receive the help of the LORD today. Dominate the devil junk, and delight in the LORD, Who loves you, is with and for you, and Who is your Victory!
