P.O.W.E.R.* Girl IV - Ch. 01 - A Year of New Beginnings

by Tonja Taylor
4/10/2023 / Short Stories

“Thank You, Queen Mother!” Pearl said, and took the sheet of paper from her mother’s hand. “I’ll put this on the kitchen bulletin board, and we can all see our birthdays.”

“That was very thoughtful of you, Pearl,” said her mother, and smiled. “It looks like we have either a birthday or a holiday every month of the year. God has such a sense of humor.”

“Yes!” said Pearl, hugging her. “He likes parties!”

“He is our positive God. He is our joy!” her mother said. “This will be handy, so we don’t forget anyone’s special day.”

“Right,” Pearl said, pointing to the list. “We only have three days till Ms. Sophia’s birthday. What should we do for her?”

“Hmm, well, you could find out her favorite flavor and you and Xi could make her a cake or pie or something,” her mother said. “Or perhaps Robert would want to make some special cookies for her.”

Xi and I can handle this without him, thought Pearl.  “I’ll ask Xi to find out, and maybe Robin can help us, too,” Pearl said. “OK, thank you, Queen Mother. I’ll let you get back to work.”

“Speaking of work, you kids need to be ready to start your last semester of homeschool tomorrow, remember?”  her mother said.

“Oh yes!” said Pearl. “We’ll just have one more time before we go to GraceLight Academy!” She jumped up and down. “Thank you so much for saying YES!”

Vivace jumped up and barked.

Pearl picked her up. “Shh, Vivace, it’s a good thing!” she told her dog.

Her mother smiled.  “This is a year of new beginnings,” said her mother. “Homeschool will be very new for Xi, but I believe she’ll like it better than public school.”

“Yeah, I think so too,” said Pearl. “Can we combine subjects and have lots of field trips this spring, like we’ve done sometimes?

Her mother laughed. “We shall see. I’d better get back to work, Sweetie. Would you please organize the classroom for me after you post the list, OK?’

“Yes ma’am,” said Pearl. “Love you!” said Pearl, then walked with Vivace to the kitchen. She put down her dog, and put the list on the board.

There, thought Pearl.  Now, we will all be more prepared to celebrate!

Vivace followed her as she went upstairs and knocked softly on the door to the room she shared with Xi.

“Hey Xi! God morning to you!”

“Yeah, right,” Xi said sleepily, sounding a bit irritated. “You are such a perky princess!”

“God helps me,” she said. “It’s a gorgeous morning, and I need you to do something for me, OK?”

“Now?” said Xi. “I need more sleep first.”

“Were you up late playing on your phone?” Pearl said.

“Yeah, so what’s it to you?” Xi barked.  "You were asleep!"

“No worries,” Pearl said. “Queen Mother said to remind you we start homeschool tomorrow, so we’ll be up by seven every morning, if not sooner.”

Xi groaned. “Then I need to sleep more today. Good night!”

“But Xi, aren’t you supposed to go work for Ms. Sophia today?”

“What time is it?” Xi asked.

Pearl looked at the clock. “Almost nine. We had breakfast already, but there is some left—"

Xi sat up. “What? I’ve got to be there by 10, and I need to take a shower, and—”

“Can you do something for me?”

“What?” Xi said as she threw back the covers and stood up and stretched, then stumbled to the closet to find some jeans.

“Careful! He keeps us from falling,” Pearl said.

“Yeah...What am I supposed to do for you?” Xi asked, pulling an outfit from the closet, then searching for underwear.

“Ask Ms. Sophia what her favorite cake or pie is, 'cause her birthday’s in three days!” Pearl replied.

“Oh man, what am I going to get her?” said Xi, stepping into her flipflops.

“You can think about it in the shower,” said Pearl. “We can make her a cake or something, and maybe you can draw her a picture. She would love it.”

“I’ll find out today, and let ya know,” Xi said, walking out the door. “Ciao for now!”

“Come on, Vivace,” Pearl said, as she walked back down to straighten up the classroom. She passed her mother’s office door, and heard her talking on the phone.

As Pearl entered the classroom, she looked at the rows of books, and the table and notebooks, flashcards and science experiments, pictures and drawings on the bulletin boards.

Wow, Daddy God, thought Pearl, thank You for Queen Mother’s good teaching of us, and for making it fun. Please help Xi enjoy this last part of eighth grade, and all of us to learn and be thankful, especially that we get to all go to GraceLight Academy!

The room wasn’t messy, but she knew Queen Mother liked things very neat and orderly.  She straightened everything as needed, and then decided to clean the tables and chairs, and spray air freshener.

I guess this room will be used for something else, since Robin and Lucas will be moving in! she thought. “Hey, where are we going to live?” she said out loud. “Or is our house going to be built by May 14? We haven’t even finished the plans yet!”

Vivace whined a bit, perhaps concerned with the note of worry in her voice.

“It’s OK, girl,” Pearl said, and picked up her dog and petted her. “Like Queen Mother says, Daddy God’s got this all worked out, since before the world began.”

“He sure does!” she heard her mother say. “I thought of that when Risa told me the date, and started to worry, but the LORD helped me give it to Him.” She hugged Pearl. “Even if we have to double up for a while, it will be all right. We are very blessed compared to most people in the world, and even in this mixed-up nation!”

Pearl nodded. “Yes ma’am. I wouldn’t mind rooming with Robin, anyway!” That would be fun, she thought. “I guess all three of us girls could room together.”

“We shall see,” said her mother. “I don’t think Burt’s even though about it, because He is so excited that Risa said Yes,” she said, and laughed. “No worries. The LORD will show us His Plan!”
