P.O.W.E.R.* Girl IV - Ch. 03 - Cell Phones, Innovations, and More

4/12/2023 / Short Stories

“OK, kiddos,” said Queen Mother, “let’s have lunch about 11:00, and then you guys can enjoy your last afternoon of freedom before homeschool.”

Pearl giggled. “Xi is at Ms. Sophia’s. Shall I walk over and get her?”

“You could, Princess, but that would be a long walk. Why don’t you text her?”

“Oh!” Pearl said. “I don’t even have her number!” Wow, I’ve got to remember I actually have a phone now! she thought. This is so cool!

Her mother laughed and looked at her phone. She gave her the number, and said, “Add it to your contacts—I can show you how to do that if you need me to.”

She helped Pearl put Xi’s number in the phone. “Now, text her and tell her who you are—since she probably doesn’t have your number—and that we need her to return by about 10:45 to get ready for an early lunch.”

“Sure!” Pearl did that. “Hey, there are lots of emoticons and such on here. Can I send her some?”

“How about just a couple,” her mother said. “I don’t want you to waste time on your phone like a lot of people do.”

“Yes, Xi spends too much time on her phone!” said Pearl, but I guess I shouldn’t have said that, she thought, feeling a bit guilty.

Her mother just looked at her, and sighed. “Precious, too often a phone or computer becomes a substitute for solid face-to-face relationships,” she said. “Xi has had a sad life, and I’m sure her phone is main source of comfort, where she feels connected to the world. Way too many kids and even adults are addicted to their devices!”

“What about Jesus? He is the real Source,” said Pearl. I know Queen Mother will be happy that I remembered what she taught me!”

“You are right, Pearl,” said her mother, “but we have to choose to connect with Christ instead of electronics. We can listen to good worship and teaching and preaching of the Word on the computer or phone, and we can read the Bible online, and interact with people about Him, so that’s good. All the inventions in the world are supposed to be helpful to people, only for good—mainly for God’s people to use for His glory.”

“Maybe we can invent some new things, too!” Pearl said.

“Of course!” Her mother smiled and hugged her. “God is always creating through us His people! He can give you an amazing idea, just He can give to anyone who will listen to Him.”  She looked thoughtful. “We might start off our science lesson talking about inventions and innovations tomorrow.”

“What’s an innovation?” Pearl asked.

“An innovation is when something already invented is changed in some way, to make it better. That’s the core of the word.”

She pointed to the phone.  “Cell phones are innovations. The first phones had cords and were connected to the walls. Elohim—”

“God the Creator, right?” Pearl interrupted.

“Right!” her mother replied. “Elohim gave someone the innovation for a cell phone—the idea for a cordless phone, and cell towers that relay the signals from one to another, so we can travel and still have phone service. It gives us much more freedom, and saves time—when we use the phone as a tool.”

“OK, is traveling with the phone being mobile?” Pearl asked.

“Right again, smart girl! It’s so much more convenient, too.”

Pearl heard lovely music. “Hey! It’s coming from my phone!”  She grabbed it and looked. “Xi sent me a text!” This is exciting! she thought.

“So now she has your number, which is fine, as long as she doesn’t send you too many texts,” her mother said. “She may confide in you some things that she wouldn’t tell you to your face, because people often feel more comfortable sharing secrets on the phone or computer.”

Pearl nodded, listening.

“You don’t have to tell me everything, of course,” said her mother, and looking her right in the eye, “but you know if there is anything concerning safety or breaking God’s law, then I need you to share that with me, my wise princess. OK?”

“Yes ma’am!” said Pearl.

“What’s for breakfast?” they heard Robert say, as he jumped and thumped down the stairs.

“Be careful!” called his mother. “You mean brunch? It’s almost time for lunch, Son, so I’ll just get you some juice.”

He zipped in, hugged his mother and Pearl, and sat down. “I’m ready, please!”

“Good job saying ‘Please’!” said his mother, as she gave him orange juice.

While he drank it,  Pearl read the text. “Xi says when she got there that Ms. Sophia told her to take the day off—then paid her to sit and talk with her! That’s cool!” said Pearl. “Anyway, Xi said she’ll be back by 10:45.” She looked at the clock. “So we have about 30 minutes.”

“Ms. Sophia is such a gift to us all,” said Pearl’s mother. “I know she is very fond of Xi.”

“What’s ‘fond’?” asked Robert.

“It means someone really likes something or someone,” she replied.

“OK! Then Ms. Sophia is very fond of me, too!” he said, and gulped his juice.

Burt laughed loudly as he came in the back door.  “You got that right, Bub! You’re like a grandson to her!”

“Hey Unc!” said Robert. “I’m hungry. Can I have something to eat?”

Burt looked at his sister. She shook her head. “He just got up, and we’re having lunch in less than an hour. He can wait.”

“You’ll make it, little guy,” he said. “Why don’t you both come help me feed your horses now.”

“Yes!” Pearl said. “I bet Sorpresa has grown since yesterday!” Pearl thought. I love my two beautiful horses! Thank You for them, Daddy God!

They walked outside, and Watchman greeted them, barking as the horses ran up to the fence. Pearl stroked Sorpresa’s little head. “You are such a cutie!” she told her. “I can’t wait till you grow up and I can train and ride you!”

“Rob, you need to get some food out of the barn for Watchman, and fill his water bowl,” his uncle told him. Robert walked toward the barn, and Pearl said, “Uncle Burt, where are we going to live when you and Ms. Risa get married?”

He laughed. “Did you think I was going to kick you out, Princess? Of course not. Risa and I already talked about that. One idea is that, since you guys will be done with homeschool by then, we can move some of the beds into that big room, and maybe give away a lot of the books and such to another homeschool family, so you’ll have room on the shelves to put things. There’s only one small closet in there right now, although we could get some mobile ones."

He hugged her. "No worries, Princess. God always makes a way!"

Yes, it was silly of me to even ask about that. Sorry, Daddy God! Pearl thought.  "I apologize, Uncle Burt," she said. "You've been so sweet to us! Thanks for letting us live with you!"

They heart Robert shouting, and then heard banging. Watchman started barking, and they ran to the barn, to see Robert swinging a piece of two-by-four against the wall.

His uncle grabbed the board and took it out of Robert’s hand, then picked him up. “What is it, Bub?”

“Stupid mice!” he said, and scowled. “They were stealing Watchman’s food! I tried to kill ‘em!”

“Ah, that makes sense,” said his uncle.  “Cats eat mice—and snakes and other things. Think we should get one, since you can’t always be here to kill the pests?”

Robert nodded, and wiped his eyes.

Hmm. I guess he was so angry, he cried! Pearl thought. Heal his little heart, please God!

Burt hugged him. “Thank you for being brave to kill the those pests. I’ll find a cat somewhere—”

“Ms. Risa says there are plenty around her house, since one had kittens,” interrupted Pearl. “Can we get one from her?”

Her uncle laughed. “Sure,” he said. “Do you have her number?”

“No,” Pearl said, “but you do, right?” She grinned.

“You bet!” he said, and put Robert down.

“Robert, it will be your job to give the cat food and water too, OK?” said his uncle.

Robert nodded as he sat on the ground, and stared at the dog food.

Burt looked up Risa’s number and gave it to Pearl. “Tell her who you are, and she’ll have your number,” he said. “And tell her I love her and can’t wait to see her again!”

Pearl giggled. “Sure! You love her a lot, don’t you?!”

“Of course!” he said. “It’s a God-thing. This is an arranged marriage, by the King of kings, the LORD Jesus Christ!”

Pearl smiled, and texted Risa.  I hope this cat won’t fight with Vivace, she thought. Jesus, please make all the animals get along, and help this cat kill all the mice and snakes and things!
