(Why) King David Said OMG

by Tonja Taylor
4/19/2023 / Christian Living

Deliver me from my enemies, O my God; defend and protect me from those who rise up against me. -- Psalm 59:1, AMPC

King David spoke (or sang!) these words to the LORD, before he sat on the throne, "when Saul sent men to watch his house in order to kill him." (from BibleGateway.com).

We can understand why!

However, if we look carefully at Psalm 59:1, it is easy to see that David was not cursing, as so many (even true Believers in Christ!) wrongly use those words.

No, he was calling out to the LORD of Heaven and earth--the pre-incarnate Christ Jesus; the One Who created Him, helped Him, Who was his only Hope.

There were other times he and others (Ezra and Nehemiah, as written in the Word) used OMG, but not the way it is used today, for the way it is used today is the same as a curse word! Many hear others use it, and it becomes a habit, but let us break that bad habit today!

O my God, I trust, lean on, rely on, and am confident in You. Let me not be put to shame or [my hope in You] be disappointed; let not my enemies triumph over me.--Psalm 25:2, AMPC

[As for me] I am poor and needy, yet the Lord takes thought and plans for me. You are my Help and my Deliverer. O my God, do not tarry!--Psalm 40:17, AMPC

Let us revere (honor and respect) the Name of the LORD, and not use His name(s) as a curse or slang word in any way! It is the Name of Jesus Christ the LORD our God, that trumps everything!

We know it is God's will to call upon Him, and use His holy Name in the right way, amen!

I delight to do Your will, O my God; yes, Your law is within my heart.--Psalm 40:8, AMPC

I will also praise You with the harp, even Your truth and faithfulness, O my God; unto You will I sing praises with the lyre, O Holy One of Israel.--Psalm 71:22, AMPC

Ask the LORD to help you use "OMG" the right way, and break any bad habit of misusing that expression (or any other). He will. It may be a process, and one way to do that is to get Scriptures about speech and meditate them ("Meditate" just means to think about and/or speak over and over), until those right words get into your heart and (often automatically!) comes out of your mouth--just like any bad habit of speaking wrong things has!

6 Hear, for I will speak excellent and princely things; and the opening of my lips shall be for right things. 7 For my mouth shall utter truth, and wrongdoing is detestable and loathsome to my lips.--Proverbs 8:6-7, AMPC

God is for you, and He will help you straighten out your speech. Just like we true Believers don't like to hear others speak negatives or cursing, neither does the LORD.

Quick prayer: Dear LORD, please help us to learn more of Your Word, and all do better at using our words more wisely. Help us cooperate with You and yield to Your dear Holy Spirit, Who is Truth, and then our speech will bring even more positivity to our lives, and to this world! Hallelujah!
