Why's to Rest

by darlene hight
12/29/2007 / Devotionals

The "Why?" bounced around the room like an electronic ping-pong ball set in motion. Sadness rested on each face. "Why?" the answerless question seeks, still, an answer. "Why did this happen to my child?" "Why my husband, marriage, job, home?" "Why me?"

Only One holds the answer to satisfy this search. He remains silent, as does a parent when asked, "Why must I go to bed now?" "Why can't I go to the party?" "Why do I have to eat my vegetables?" The answer is in the silence but the "Why" refuses to accept it, for now.

With time the "Why" is replaced with other questions. "What do I do now?" "How do I live with this?" These questions are small steps towards satisfaction, resolution, peace and acceptance.

Sometimes this side of heaven, there aren't any satisfactory answers. It is then that we must trust in the character of God. Of course, the problem is that we either don't know enough about the character of God or we place foreign characteristics on Him. At times, we place the characteristics of our earthly father. Is your father a push over? God is not.

**Galatians 6:7 Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. **

Is your father a stern authoritarian? God is not.

**Nehemiah 9:17b But you are a forgiving God, gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love.**

** Psalm 119:156 Your compassion is great, O Lord; preserve my life according to your laws. **

Is your father cruel? God is never cruel.

**Deuteronomy 32:4 He is a Rock, his works are perfect, and all his ways just. A faithful God who does no wrong, upright and just is he.**

What we long for will one day be satisfied. We have God's word.

**Jeremiah29: 11 For I know the plans that I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a future and a hope. **

***II Corinthians 5:1-5 Now we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands. Meanwhile we groan, longing to be clothed with our heavenly dwelling because when we are clothed, we will not be found naked. For while we are in this tent, we groan and are burdened, because we do not wish to be unclothed but to be clothed with our heavenly dwelling, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life. Now it is God who has made us for this very purpose and has given us the Spirit as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.***

**Psalm 63:5 My soul will be satisfied as with the richest of foods; **

**63:7Because you are my help, I will sing in the shadow of your wings.**

Now, I lay my "Whys" to rest.
Trusting my God to know what's best.
No more questions will I bring.
Safe against his breast I sing.
Spirit deposit, guarantee
my future; hope is His plan for me.
