Drinking: Delightful or Disastrous

by Nancy Quinn
2/01/2008 / Devotionals

Linda was out with her co-workers after work one evening. A small group from her department had decided to go to a nearby restaurant for dinner to wind down from the hectic deadline they had successfully met that day. Linda was the outgoing member of the group. Since she decided she was starving and didn't want to wait for a table, she spoke up and said the bar area was fine when the hostess asked if they wanted to wait for a table. She didn't even notice Julie's hesitation when she boldly led the group over to the noisy, smoke-filled bar area of the restaurant. Julie wondered how her friend could have forgotten their talk last week about her problem, and then prayed that she would be able to stay strong that evening. What a mistake to accept an invitation to dinner when she had been sober for only a month.

Is alcohol a delightful treat you share with friends on an evening out, or a disastrous trap that makes you uninhibited and drowning in bad choices, or even selfishly leading others into sin? Ask other Christians their opinions on alcohol and you will get varied opinions and passionate convictions. Where do YOU stand?

I guess your stand on alcohol depends on your background, your beliefs and how it affects you and your walk with Christ. Is it a stumbling block to you that causes you to sin? Do you have friends who have an addiction that could cause them to stumble if you drink in front of them? As a Christian, do you have co-workers who are watching your every move? Whatever freedoms we feel we have, we should always be conscious of other's beliefs and weaknesses and what kind of testimony we are giving by our own actions and choices. (I Corinthians 8:9 "Be careful, however, that the exercise of your freedom does not become a stumbling block to the weak.")

We have so many choices in our life and some things like drinking are something we need to pray about. When we become Christians, the Holy Spirit lives in us and we need to treat our bodies like a temple. Is it a sin to drink? Is drinking condemned by God? Or is drinking in moderation, like other things done in moderation, fine to participate in? As in all the choices you make in your Christian walk, pray to the Lord to lead you in this decision as well. However, I encourage you to look around. Around you are non-Christians watching you, and weaker Christians who look to you as a mentor. So in everything you do, don't allow others to stumble by the choices you make.

Further Bible Study:
Proverbs 20:1 "Wine produces mockers; alcohol leads to brawls. Those led astray by drink cannot be wise."
Romans 14:21 "It is better not to eat meat or drink wine or to do anything else that will cause your brother to fall."
2 Corinthians 6:3 "We put no stumbling block in anyone's path, so that our ministry will not be discredited."
Romans 14:13 "So let's stop condemning each other. Decide instead to live in such a way that you will not cause another believer to stumble and fall."

May God bless these words as I strive to encourage others in their walk with Christ. Please contact me if you would like to request a specific lesson that Lucy Mouse can teach your children or if you would like a coloring page to be sent to match the story!
