Sshh, It's a Secret

by Nancy Quinn
2/02/2008 / Devotionals

"What's going to happen to me if I talk about our meetings?" Joe disgustingly wondered, as he listened to the oath he was supposed to repeat if he joined this group. He just decided to begin attending the new club in town, thinking it would be a great business networking tool with other men. But he was starting to have second thoughts because the members had to stand up and take an oath of secrecy that they wouldn't talk with anyone about what went on in the meetings, and he didn't like the description of what would happen to him if he told. Something in his instincts made him hesitate. Maybe I don't need to network this badly, he wondered, as he eyed his escape with the glaring "Exit" sign flashing over the door.

Clubs and organizations are great. They can be wonderful networking tools, witnessing opportunities for your faith, and fellowship havens. But are ALL clubs ok? Just like the Holy Spirit made Joe question a situation, the Lord is also with you and guides you if you'll allow yourself to hear His voice. Many members of Joe's club didn't think it was a big deal to take an oath. After all, it was just words and didn't mean anything, right? And they had to do it in order to be a part of the club so they ignored those nagging, uncomfortable feelings. But for Joe, it was something that felt wrong and he felt he would be disobeying the Lord if he joined this club. As a Christian, if you're a member of a club or organization, what is the Lord telling you?

Matthew 5:33-37
"You have also heard that our ancestors were told, 'You must not break your vows; you must carry out the vows you make to the Lord.' But I say, do not make any vows! Do not say, 'By heaven!' because heaven is God's throne. And do not say, 'By the earth!' because the earth is his footstool. And do not say, 'By Jerusalem!' for Jerusalem is the city of the great King. Do not even say, 'By my head!' for you can't turn one hair white or black. Just say a simple, 'Yes, I will,' or 'No, I won't.' Anything beyond this is from the evil one."

James 5:12
"But most of all, my brothers and sisters, never take an oath, by heaven or earth or anything else. Just say a simple yes or no, so that you will not sin and be condemned."

May God bless these words as I strive to encourage others in their walk with Christ. Please contact me if you would like to request a specific lesson that Lucy Mouse can teach your children or if you would like a coloring page to be sent to match the story!
