Clean Up in Aisle 3

by Nancy Quinn
2/03/2008 / Devotionals

Oh, if only the words we say could be easily cleaned up like a cereal spill in Aisle 3 of our grocery store. (Or even a mess from that big Wal-Mart pickle jar!) There are so many verses in the Bible that remind me to control my tongue and to be careful what I say. And just when I think I'm doing great, out will come something that I wish I could easily sweep up like a spilled box of cheerios. But in order to repair these mistakes, I need to ask forgiveness from God, and then ask forgiveness of the person that I said something to that was thoughtless.
Proverbs 6:2-4 "If you have been trapped by what you said, ensnared by the words of your mouth, then do this, my son, to free yourself, since you have fallen into your neighbor's hands: Go and humble yourself; press your plea with your neighbor! Allow no sleep to your eyes, no slumber to your eyelids."

I need to pray daily that my words will always build people up and encourage them. I know sometimes for me, one thoughtless word from a friend or co-worker can hurt and then I think about it all day. Lord, help me always think before I speak and remember my words can either heal relationships, or very easily and quickly destroy them.
James 3:3 "A bit in the mouth of a horse controls the whole horse. A small rudder on a huge ship in the hands of a skilled captain sets a course in the face of the strongest winds. A word out of your mouth may seem of no account, but it can accomplish nearly anything or destroy it!"

The most powerful verse for me to remind me to be careful of my words is from Matthew 12:37 where we're accountable for everything we say. I will either be acquitted or condemned by the Lord someday by all the words I've said. So I'm going to keep doing my best to not have to clean up any more cereal or pickle jar spills in my life!

Proverbs 10: 19 "When words are many, sin is not absent, but he who holds his tongue is wise."

May God bless these words as I strive to encourage others in their walk with Christ. Please contact me if you would like to request a specific lesson that Lucy Mouse can teach your children or if you would like a coloring page to be sent to match the story!
