Balance in Volunteering

by Nancy Quinn
2/09/2008 / Christian Living

"Sure, I'd be happy to." Oh, what did I just do? Signing up for more things at church was the last thing I had time to do, but it was a small church and I felt obligated since I was asked. I would somehow figure out how to balance all the other things I had volunteered to do. I guessed the multiplying dust bunnies under my couch and the laundry could wait another week.

Dedicating your time and talents to the church is imperative to the Lord's work because we each have talents the Lord gives us to further His kingdom. But, when family and home responsibilities started to feel like they weren't as important too, then I found it was time for an adjustment. The Lord had given me talents and gifts to further His Kingdom, but I know signing up for everything at church should not be at the sacrifice of all the other things He has placed in my life to be responsible for as well.

What are the gifts and talents the Lord has blessed you with? For me, I chose the things I felt sincerely called to do and felt the most comfortable doing so I knew those were sincerely my gifts and talents. The Lord has extraordinarily blessed me and I know I need to be a good steward in everything He's placed in my life to manage. And sometimes in my exuberance to serve Him, I found myself neglecting other things that I shouldn't.

That big two-letter word "no" was hard for me to learn to say because I love to help and had trouble turning people down when they asked me to do things. Balance in our lives is important, not only for our physical health, but our emotional and spiritual health as well. I believe it was Mother Theresa who had said to do small things with great love. That's a balancing measurement for me. Am I stressed out and doing things with a forced smile just because I feel obligated, or am I excited and have a sincere smile that goes all the way down to my heart when I reach out and use my gifts and talents with great love? When I keep my life in balance, my outreach is more effective and my joy of the Lord can shine brighter.

Further Bible Study:
Romans 12:4-8 "Just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. If a man's gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith. If it is serving, let him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach; if it is encouraging, let him encourage; if it is contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously; if it is leadership, let him govern diligently; if it is showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully."

I Corinthians 14:12 "So it is with you. Since you are eager to have spiritual gifts, try to excel in gifts that build up the church."

I Peter 4:10 "As each one has received a special gift, employ it in serving one another as good stewards of the manifold grace of God."

May God bless these words as I strive to encourage others in their walk with Christ. Please contact me if you would like to request a specific lesson that Lucy Mouse can teach your children or if you would like a coloring page to be sent to match the story!
