The greatest moment in eternity
by Adam Bennett
2/15/2008 / Devotionals
They did what your power and will had decided beforehand should happen. (Acts 4:28 NLT)
Jesus' saving work on the cross was not God's second plan. He was not making the most of a bad situation. Instead all the peoples and authorities conspired together to, as the ESV puts it, do whatever God's hand and God's plan had predestined to take place.
This was also a theme in Peter's Pentecost sermon when he said, "But God knew what would happen, and his prearranged plan was carried out when Jesus was betrayed. With the help of lawless Gentiles, you nailed him to a cross and killed him" (Acts 2:23 NLT).
We can learn valuable lessons here:
Firstly, it is amazing to know that God loves us so much, and values our salvation so highly, that he had from the beginning of time intended this dramatic and effective salvation for us through Jesus' sacrifice. He left nothing to chance!
In Ephesians 1:4-5 Paul reinforces this saying, "Even before he made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in his eyes. God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure." (NLT)
Secondly, there is nothing beyond the control of our sovereign God. The greatest evil ever committed, the worst conspiracy man has ever participated in, was intended by God himself to achieve the greatest good which has ever been done by mankind.
The worst moment in history gave birth to the greatest moment in eternity!
Let all who claim that God must be evil because of the atrocities 'he allows' note that God, who in Jesus was the subject of the evil of the cross, reigned over this enormous wrong and through it, and only through it, achieved the miracle of salvation we were unable to provide for ourselves.
