Lucy Mouse Chooses Friends Wisely

by Nancy Quinn
2/19/2008 / Short Stories

Lucy Mouse was a very tiny, white mouse with pink ears. She had a tuft of hair that never seemed to lie down quite right on the top of her head, so she wrapped a pink polka-dotted bow around the offending hair. Lucy's pretty bow now drooped down over her eyes and little tears dropped onto her tiny paws. You see, she was sitting on the blue chair next to the principal's office. She had a rather bad day, but learned a valuable lesson from an unexpected friend.

Lucy was a very shy mouse. Because she was so tiny, she always felt she needed to choose bold friends. Perhaps, she thought, they may help her become bold too. But, unfortunately, she found out that her bold friends were not so nice. It all started innocently at recess that morning. Her bold friends started to tease a girl because she had rather large feet. Lucy didn't say anything, but stood there and just waited near her friends. She breathed a sigh of relief when they all decided to run to the swings. But in dismay, Lucy noticed Burt the Rat pushing someone off the swing so he could sit on it. Well, pushing became shoving, and then dust began to fly. Coughing, Lucy watched the dust begin to clear to reveal the principal pointing his finger.

"Please, not me, not me, not me, became a whispered prayer." Her tummy dropped as the accusing finger included her too.

Dragging her feet, she joined the bold friends in a line to sit on the blue chairs outside the principal's office. One by one, the bold friends walked out after seeing the principal. Some of them were laughing, and others looked a little scared.

At last, the principal called Lucy's name from the depths of the inner office. She was very afraid, but decided to be brave and walked slowly into his office. He looked at her sternly over his gold-wired glasses and when he saw the tears, he softened.

"Lucy, you've only been at this school for a month and I know you like to be with the outgoing students who seem to be the popular kids to try to fit in. However, do you really think you chose your friends wisely?"

Lucy raised her head and shook her head no. She remembered seeing her principal at church one Sunday morning sitting near her family. He reminded her of the sermon they heard that day about making choices and reminded her about the Bible verse about walking with the wise and you become wise. But if you associate with fools, you will get into trouble too. Lucy knew that even though she didn't do anything wrong that morning, she was with the bold group so she got into trouble too because she was with them.

The principal handed Lucy a tissue to wipe her tears and said she could go and gave her an encouraging smile. Lucy's pink polka-dotted bow bobbed as she walked with a lighter step down the empty hallway to her next class. She would ask God to help her meet new friends. And maybe she'd ask for friends who weren't quite so bold.

Proverbs 13:20 "Walk with the wise and become wise; associate with fools and get in trouble." (NLT)

May God bless these words as I strive to encourage others in their walk with Christ. Please contact me if you would like to request a specific lesson that Lucy Mouse can teach your children or if you would like a coloring page to be sent to match the story!
