Lucy Mouse Learns We're All the Same, A Children's Story

by Nancy Quinn
3/12/2008 / Short Stories

The green glass bottle floated down the little stream and bumped into Sally Stink Bug and her brother Sam. He grabbed the bottle and pulled out the cork. A note was inside and he read it. "My name is Emily Earthworm. I'm really long and brown. My favorite thing to play is Hide and Seek."

"Hey, let's write about us on this note too!" said Sally enthusiastically. They found a pencil and added to the note. "Hi, we're Sam and Sally Stink Bugs. We're brown and green and think we smell pretty. Our favorite thing to do is to hunt for treasures in the stream." Together, they tossed the green bottle back into the stream and watched as it floated downstream.

Linda Ladybug was sunning herself on a rock when Gus Grasshopper almost jumped onto her foot in his excitement. "Look, Linda! What's that in the water?" Linda spread her wings and fluttered above the rock as she squinted into the sunlight. The bottle bobbed and spun in the current and floated directly to them. Gus held tightly to the bottle with his forelegs, and Linda pulled on the cork. She tumbled into the grass and then quickly fluttered back to the bottle. Gus pulled the note out of the bottle and read it. The two friends excitedly decided to add to the note. "Linda, would you write I'm Gus Grasshopper. I'm green and lean, and like to jump everywhere I go." She carefully wrote the words, and then added her own. "I'm Linda Ladybug, and I'm round and red, with three black spots on my back. I love to sit in the sun, and read adventure books, and talk to my friends." The two friends carefully rolled the paper and pushed it into the bottle. Linda fluttered over to the cork and then tapped it back into the bottle. Gus hopped at the bottle and rolled it back into the water.

Lucy Mouse was sitting by the pond with Chris the Koi fish one Saturday afternoon when suddenly a shiny green bottle plopped into the water beside Chris. The bottle had traveled a long distance as the stream meandered through the countryside and into Lucy's little town where it had ended at the pond in the little park where she played every day. Chris pushed the bottle to the edge of the water where Lucy was sitting at the water's edge. She pulled the paper out of the bottle and read the notes to Chris. "I like to talk to my friends like Linda Ladybug does," said Chris. And Lucy Mouse added that she liked to play hide and seek and read adventure stories like Linda Ladybug and Emily Earthworm. "I guess no matter where you go; we all like to do the same things. No matter how different we look, we're all the same." Lucy remembered the lesson in Sunday School where she learned that God created everyone and everything in the world. She wondered why some people have so much trouble accepting others who may be red like Linda Ladybug, or green like Gus Grasshopper. "If everyone looked the same, it would make a very boring world", thought Lucy. She put the note back in the bottle and decided to bring it to Sunday School the next morning to show her teacher.

Isn't it wonderful that God made everyone in the world different? God made you and He loves you just the way you are. Can you be a good friend to others even if they look different from you? Heaven will be a beautiful rainbow of everyone who asked Jesus to be their Best Friend and Savior. If you pray the following prayer that Lucy Mouse did, you will someday get to live in heaven too. Jesus loves you very much!

Dear God, I know I am a sinner. Please forgive me. I believe that Jesus died for me on the cross and that He arose from the grave so that I can live with Him in Heaven someday. I am now trusting Jesus as my Savior. Thank you for loving me and saving me. Amen.

Colossians 1:16 "For it was in Him that all things were created, in heaven and on earth, things seen and things unseen, whether thrones, dominions, rulers, or authorities; all things were created and exist through Him, and in and for Him."

May God bless these words as I strive to encourage others in their walk with Christ. Please contact me if you would like to request a specific lesson that Lucy Mouse can teach your children or if you would like a coloring page to be sent to match the story!
