A Rescued Crow

by Nancy Quinn
3/18/2008 / Devotionals

"Shoo! Pesky crow!" I waved my hands and tried to get the huge black pest away from my garbage. I didn't have time to clean up a mess. It was time to baby-sit my friend's three boys and my son was looking forward to going to their house. It was outside of town on a big acreage; perfect for curious and rambunctious boys to expend lots of energy. We went for a walk through the woods together with their two big dogs. Soon, one dog bounded over toward a slight movement in the grass. The boys raced over and discovered a huge black crow. He was struggling to move and must have hurt his wing. Immediately, the trauma team took over. The oldest boy carefully carried the crow at arm's length to the house. The littlest boy chased after the older boys yelling, "I want to name him Buddy!" After my firm disapproval that we would set up an emergency hospital room in the house, the boys found an old towel and a cardboard box. After tucking him in gently, they decided to hunt for worms to feed him.

As the newly assigned nurse, I watched the patient while the boys searched for his dinner. I was able to finally look closely at the bird I earlier thought of as a pest. He was actually quite beautiful close up. His jet black feathers had a bright sheen and he watched me and cocked his head with intelligent eyes. I touched his back lightly and he let me pet him. He gobbled up all the worms the boys retrieved and started to hop around in the box. We knew he'd be ok. "Um, boys, maybe you'd better go wash your hands now!"

Just like I judged that crow from a distance as only a pest, sometimes I judge others from a distance too. Do you ever shop in a store and glance at someone, making a decision about them based on what they wear? The kids behind the long bangs and the nose rings are loved by God as much as we are! Baggy clothes, perhaps a homeless look, shouldn't make me shy away from someone because they don't fit the look of what I think is normal. I say a little prayer for the kids who are in all black with what they call the "goth" look. I give a smile to an elderly woman whose clothes don't match. I purposely smile at people and say "excuse me" as I walk by. My new friend Buddy the Crow taught me to look past my own opinions and see people for who they really are; God's children. And he loves us all equally. Shouldn't I do the same?

Romans 12:9 "Don't just pretend to love others. Really love them. Hate what is wrong. Hold tightly to what is good."

I Corinthians 13:1-2 "If I could speak all the languages of earth and of angels, but didn't love others, I would only be a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. If I had the gift of prophecy, and if I understood all of God's secret plans and possessed all knowledge, and if I had such faith that I could move mountains, but didn't love others, I would be nothing."

May God bless these words as I strive to encourage others in their walk with Christ. Please contact me if you would like to request a specific lesson that Lucy Mouse can teach your children or if you would like a coloring page to be sent to match the story!
