is a foundering donkey
silver in flavour, eyes knowing
the lean of her flank
older than memory. And I
am privileged at
her acknowledgement
as she advances towards me
legs unsure, heart steady
eyes betraying a royal spirit
knowing the end of days are soon.
But right now her only goal
is allowing my hand to
stroke her neck, rub her mane
and be called "friend."
