The Grass is NOT Greener

by Nancy Quinn
3/25/2008 / Devotionals

My dog Scooby's antics provide us with laughter every day. Since he takes everything away from our other golden retriever/collie Princess, we've resorted to buying them identical chew toys. However, that brilliant idea didn't work! Scooby will leave his chew toy to go over to see what Princess has. He'll then stand over her head as she lies down and bark at her. When that doesn't work, he backs up and sits on her head. My Princess lives up to her sweet nature and she lets him take the toy, and then I just bring her Scooby's toy and all is well in doggy world again.

Do you ever see things that others have and wish you had them too? I caught myself being envious at church one day. Every week I would see a "perfect" family with their three beautiful girls sitting in church. The husband was on the church board, and they taught Sunday School together. I was sitting with just my son each week because my husband doesn't go to church and was feeling rather sorry for myself.

I soon discovered that sometimes the idyllic family is just a faade. The husband ended up leaving his family to have an affair with his secretary, shocking the church community. I learned a valuable lesson that I should be content with my own circumstances. I began counting my many blessings from the Lord that day. Even though I may think others have a better life than me, the Lord opened my eyes to my own situation. And my life is pretty good! If you find yourself envying someone else, start counting your blessings from the Lord, and see if you're able to stop!

I Timothy 6:6 "But godliness with contentment is great gain."

Hebrews 13:5 "Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you."

Proverbs 14:30 "A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones."

May God bless these words as I strive to encourage others in their walk with Christ. Please contact me if you would like to request a specific lesson that Lucy Mouse can teach your children or if you would like a coloring page to be sent to match the story!
