TODAY'S MEAL poem

The church is busy with
Christmas cheer, potatoes, peas
and gravy a pattern
of kindness from them to us
from the streets, clothed in
sorrow, sheets of plastic to cover
our heads, three layers of
coats to warm our souls.

"Prayer will do that," the
pastor intones, "Jesus died to
save your sins."
All I want is this meal
to eat in peace, no strings
attached

but then as I look around
others grunting with satisfaction
tummies full , washed
down with coffee and biscuits
followed by a 'trifle' dessert
and I wonder about
Jesus as I cover myself in
His mansion of peace.
