Prayer for Controlling Anger

by Jessica Gerald
3/27/2008 / Prayers

Dear Lord,

We thank you that you have set the example. You are gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and rich in love. Please give us these qualities, too. (Psalm 145:8)

May we become slow to speak and slow to become angry, because our anger will not bring about the righteous life that you desire. We want our lives to glorify you, not bring you dishonor by our quick tempers. (James 1:19,20)

Don't let us be people who are easily provoked, because anger resides in the lap of fools, and quick-tempered people can do foolish things. (Ecclesiastes 7:9; Proverbs 14:17)

Help us to be careful who we associate with because hot-tempered people can get us into trouble. (Proverbs 22:24,25)

A patient person is better than a warrior, one who controls his temper is better than one who takes a city. (Proverbs 16:32)

Enable us to refrain from anger and turn from wrath. Help us not to fret because it only leads to evil. (Psalm 37:8)

May our wisdom give us patience. Remind us that it is to our glory to overlook an offense. (Proverbs 19:11)

Help us to get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, brawling, slander, malice. Instead, may we be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God has forgiven us. (Ephesians 4:31,32)

Don't let us ever take revenge on people. Don't let us be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. (Romans 12:19,21)

If we do become angry, don't let that anger cause us to sin. May we cool down and forgive quickly. (Ephesians 4:26)

If we get into a confrontation with someone, cause us to remember that a gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. (Proverbs 15:1)

Please forgive us for any sin caused by anger in our lives. We confess it and we thank you that you are faithful and just, and will forgive us and cleanse us from any unrighteousness. (1 John 1:9)

In the name of Jesus we pray,
Amen
