Security Blankets and Obedience

by Nancy Quinn
3/31/2008 / Devotionals

When I was a little girl growing up in Iowa, my pink "Unky" was a blanket that never left my side. It trailed behind me over the wooden floors of our little town grocery store, and was beside me when I slept at night. It was a childhood symbol of comfort and safety to me.

I got the brilliant idea one day to put it over my head and scare my sister. After all, if I couldn't see, then she couldn't see me either. Misjudging the distance, I ran right into my crib and got to take a short trip to the hospital for two stitches in my chin. That was the first memory I had before Kindergarten!

I may have thought it was funny to scare my sister so long ago, but I've grown up and have grown out of the desire for scary things like movies and haunted houses. I try to focus on things that are good, and pure, and lovely. And I know the Lord does not want me to think about frightening things either. He wants my mind filled with beauty and purity. So the next time a friend wants to watch a scary movie, I'll remember my "Unky" from so long ago and choose the comfort and safety of Christ and obey his commands.

Philippians 4:8 "Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honorable, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things."

II Timothy 1:7 "For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind."

Joshua 1:9 "Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go."

May God bless these words as I strive to encourage others in their walk with Christ. Please contact me if you would like to request a specific lesson that Lucy Mouse can teach your children or if you would like a coloring page to be sent to match the story!
