A POTPOURRI poems
by Richard L. Provencher
3/31/2008 / Poetry
Canadian Woods
The horizon is a slash
of colours as ladder steps
crawling one above another
dusk grinning at the
end of another day. Gone
are logger-assaults
and front-end loaders
tormenting an expanse
of primal timber
where burnished pines
sentinel along ridges of tundra
wilderness a domain
of ancient sunsets
reddened sky turning a
yellowish tinge to daytime's
dim. From our canoe
faces pause in complete awe.

E-mail
From this side of high tech
my heart is pounding.
What to say from so far away?
Talk to myself in the silence
stroking keys, thoughts
wandering?
No, not a meaningless collection
of words---Weather? Politics?
Aha, that's it
and a vital message streaks
across the heavens
"I love you. I miss you."

In the Noose
Man is noosed in a rabbit
snare, anxious to be about his
business, busy-busy.
Transitions, places to go
deals to make
and now the noose has
taken hold
if only he had spent more time
sharing supper with family
and friends, too late,
oh no, not.
Pry yourself loose and
debate the issues lean on the
Lord and encourage those
who love you and your
birthright will be an accolade
of bright colours.

Looking Out For #1
Winter break rushes along
the
sidewalk,
meandering
between stubborn snow banks
time for a quick
Tim Horton's caffeine fix.
Returning, a satisfied look
adds an easy sway to his walk
coffee in one hand,
cigarette dangling from the
other, ah the good life.
Pauses outside his
retailer's door, watching shoppers
in their scramble for holiday
attention
one last drag, tosses the butt
then back to work
carrying his real treat.
*
Wilson Creek Cove
gathers a rainbow of California
colours from
within the clouds
reddish-dazzle
interrupting pink, lavender
and purple in a
smorgasbord of delight
backdrop of excellent
view, ocean waves sloshing
mightily against bluffs, as
silhouettes of resistance.
*
Sky Freckles
Across the sky they swim
in eager sweeps
wings rapid-fluttering
pintails, teal and
canvasbacks
doesn't matter what
the breed
they're coming as
a runaway train, heading
right for little ole me.
*
Toronto Exhibition
Watch that young
man, eyes lit up
seemed like
an impossible wait.
"We'll go this summer,"
I said, "Promise."
Now we're part of the
crowd, he can
hardly wait to get inside
the gate
looks me in the eye
with a camera smile, arm
reaching for mine
an expression of joy
grabbing at the noise and
fun ahead, my son.

Who's the Boss?
"MEOW!"
opens the door
then JC smells the
fence post.
Leaves escape the wind
as she chases
a mouse peeking from the
woodpile. They play
tag.
JC walks on snow banks,
visits a lonely patch of
grass
then
hurries across Rosewyn Place
and Park Street
tummy leading her
home.
Food awaits.
