Lucy Mouse Discovers a Fruit of the Spirit: Faithfulness, a Children's Story

by Nancy Quinn
4/09/2008 / Short Stories

Sounds of the school bell rang through the hallways. Lucy Mouse scampered through the doors and skidded into the classroom. She didn't want to start her first day of school being late! Giving quick waves to all her friends, she found the desk with her name on it and sat down. Her whiskers quivered and she smiled. Everything smelled new and fresh and Lucy Mouse liked the first day of school as much as the last every year.

Lucy grinned at Moose Mouse as Miss Pickles announced she would be putting a sign-up sheet on her desk for volunteering at the student store. Lucy loved to serve others so she knew that serving was one of the gifts Jesus gave her when she became a Christian.

Before Lucy knew it, the morning had zoomed by and the bell rang for lunchtime. The lunchroom was buzzing as everyone greeted friends they hadn't seen all summer. Lucy's table filled with excitement as everyone took turns sharing all the fun they had at Vacation Bible School that summer. Lucy touched the beaded cross necklace she had made in her group and it brought back all the happy memories of everything she learned during the summer. Lucy had carefully kept all the papers she had taken home during Vacation Bible School and kept them in her treasure box. She wanted to remember all the lessons she learned so she read the papers to remind herself of the lessons she had learned before she said her prayers each night.

Recess was next after lunch and everyone raced into the sunshine onto the playground. All the same things were there welcoming the children back to school. The teacher bounced the red rubber balls onto the playground and Lucy scooped one up and ran to Moose. "Oh, no", Lucy thought to herself. She saw Albert the Rat, the school bully, standing in front of Moose with his hands on his hips and a scowl on his face. "Give me the ball". He commanded.

Lucy said enthusiastically, "Come on, Albert. We're playing dodge ball." Lucy and Moose saw Albert hesitate and then reluctantly he followed them to play with the other kids. Moose Mouse pulled a key chain out of his pocket and tossed it to Albert. He said, "Albert, we made key chains this summer at Vacation Bible School. I made you this one because I knew red was your favorite color." Albert held out his hand and caught the key chain with total shock on his face. Lucy gave Moose a big grin and scampered to her side of the court. Yes, this school year would be a good one. Lucy and Moose were determined to make Albert a friend and to show him how much Jesus loved him.

Can you find the ways the Fruit of the Spirit Faithfulness was used in this story? Lucy and Moose are faithful in caring about others and showing their love for Jesus. How can you show Faithfulness this week?

When you become a Christian, God will help you develop ALL the fruits of the Spirit and He gives you the Holy Spirit to help you do your best each day. If you don't know Jesus as your best friend yet, you can just pray the prayer below that Lucy and her friends did, and Jesus will come into your heart and be your best friend too! God is faithful and loves you ALL the time! He's patiently waiting for you to invite Jesus to be your best friend. Can you hear him knocking on the door of your heart? Won't you invite him in?

Dear God, I know I am a sinner. Please forgive me. I believe that Jesus died for me on the cross and that He arose from the grave so that I can live with Him in Heaven someday. I am now trusting Jesus as my Savior. Thank you for loving me and saving me. Amen.

Galations 5:22-23
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such there is no law.

May God bless these words as I strive to encourage others in their walk with Christ. Please contact me if you would like to request a specific lesson that Lucy Mouse can teach your children or if you would like a coloring page to be sent to match the story!
