Lucy Mouse Discovers a Fruit of the Spirit, Kindness: A Children's Story

by Nancy Quinn
4/14/2008 / Short Stories

The blue water looked inviting as Lucy Mouse sat down at the edge of the pond under the willow tree and slipped into the water. She shivered and then the water felt better after a few seconds. It was summer and the pond in the park was full of her friends and classmates. As she hopped through the water to reach the other side, she noticed a small mouse trying to reach her little boat that bobbed away from her. Lucy Mouse grabbed the boat and handed it to her as she reached the other side of the pond where Moose Mouse and Missy Mouse were standing with a colorful beach ball.

As the friends formed a triangle in the water and tossed the ball to each other, Lucy Mouse noticed a small, grey mouse standing by himself near the corner of the pool with his arms crossed. Lucy tossed the ball near him and said "Hey, could you toss me that ball? Would you like to play with us?" He reached for the ball and suddenly smiled and joined their group.

They soon tired of playing catch and decided to swim to the other side of the pool. Lucy heard a yell and looked over as Albert Mouse, the class bully, was splashing at a little white mouse with pink ears, and yelling for her to hand him his Frisbee. Lucy Mouse hopped near her and grabbed the Frisbee and tossed it to Albert. The little mouse had tears trickling down her whiskers, and Lucy helped lift her out of the pond where her mom wrapped her in a towel and gave her a piece of cheese.

Lucy Mouse swam over to her friends and they decided to have a swimming race. Exhausted, the friends decided to sit near the pond and drink their juice. Their new friend Joseph brought his beach towel over and sat down with them. Lucy Mouse brought an extra juice so gave it to Joseph. Missy Mouse shared her bag of cookies and Moose Mouse brought out cheese crackers and carefully counted them out so they all could have an equal amount. Finding out Joseph just moved to town, Lucy said she would look for him at school and introduce him to all their friends and would help him find his way to the classrooms if he'd like. Joseph smiled and thanked Lucy, and the friends stretched out on their beach towels and closed their eyes to rest.

The sun began to get hotter and Lucy Mouse noticed Moose's nose getting very red. She found the bottle of suntan lotion in the bag near her mom and tossed it to Moose first. They each put more lotion on to protect their fur from the hot sun, and then jumped into the pond to cool off. The pond began to empty out by late afternoon and when Lucy's mom saw her yawning, she called to her.

Lucy's mom handed each of the friends their beach towels and offered to take them for an ice cream cone as they walked home. Lucy Mouse couldn't wait to get her favorite a chocolate twist cone with chocolate sprinkles. They walked home slowly, each enjoying the tasty ice cream and thanked Lucy's mom again. After they dropped off Joseph, Moose and Missy at their homes, Lucy and her mom slowly walked down the steps of the basement of the little white church were they lived. Lucy yawned as she reached the door. It was a fun day and she was glad God gave her such nice friends and a special new friend that day too.

Can you find the ways that Lucy Mouse showed the Fruit of the Spirit called Kindness in the story? There are lots of ways you can be kind to others. When you become a Christian, God will help you develop ALL the fruits of the Spirit. He gives you the Holy Spirit to help you do your best each day. If you don't know Jesus as your best friend yet, you can just pray the prayer below that Lucy and her friends prayed, and Jesus will come into your heart and be your best friend too! Jesus loves you very much. Can you hear him knocking on the door to your heart? Won't you invite Him in?
*******************
Dear God, I know I am a sinner. Please forgive me. I believe that Jesus died for me on the cross and that He arose from the grave so that I can live with Him in Heaven someday. I am now trusting Jesus as my Savior. Thank you for loving me and saving me. Amen.
*******************
Galations 5:22-23
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such there is no law.

May God bless these words as I strive to encourage others in their walk with Christ. Please contact me if you would like to request a specific lesson that Lucy Mouse can teach your children or if you would like a coloring page to be sent to match the story!
