Lucy Mouse Discovers a Fruit of the Spirit, Love: A Children's Story

by Nancy Quinn
4/14/2008 / Short Stories

Lucy Mouse suddenly sat up in bed. What just woke her, she wondered? There, she heard the noise again. Putting on her pink bathrobe and fuzzy slippers, she padded over to the kitchen. "Mom, are you OK?" Lucy questioned. Her mom said she didn't feel good and thought a cup of hot tea might make her feel better. Lucy led her mom over to the couch in their tiny living room and went back to the kitchen to finish making her tea. She decided to make toast too because her mom always made her toast when Lucy didn't feel good. Lucy carefully carried the tea and the plate of toast to her Mom and hurried to get ready for school.

After putting her favorite books and a box of tissues on the table beside the couch for her mom, Lucy Mouse hugged her goodbye and promised to take care of her after school too. She scampered up the stairs of the little white church where they lived in the basement behind the Christmas ornament box and raced through the park to the water fountain to wait for her friend Moose Mouse so they could walk to school together.

The morning went quickly and as lunchtime approached, Lucy Mouse heard her tummy starting to rumble. She was in Art Class and she wondered why her favorite teacher Miss Pickle looked so sad. The bell distracted her thoughts, and everyone lined up to go to lunch. Sally Mouse was craning her neck around Lucy trying to talk to her best friend Mandy Mouse, so Lucy said she could get ahead of her so they could talk easier.

Lucy Mouse took everything out of her lunch bag and was happy as she looked around at her friends. They all talked about the weekend and made plans to meet in the little park to play on the new slide. Lucy put the shiny red cherry back in her lunch bag and finished her piece of cheese as the bell rang. When Lucy got to her homeroom, she asked her teacher if she could go back to the art classroom for a minute. She carried the lunch bag down the hall and peeked into the classroom. Miss Pickle wasn't in, so she tiptoed in and placed the shiny little fruit on her desk to surprise her teacher. She knew Miss Pickle liked cherries.

Lucy hurried back to class and quickly found her pencil and began writing her spelling words. Mandy Mouse struggled with reaching for her pencil as it rolled across her desk onto the floor. She had broken her arm last week and the cast on her arm made it sometimes hard to do her work. Lucy reached over onto the floor and handed her the pencil. She smiled her thanks and they both went back to quietly writing. Lucy peeked at the clock again and her whiskers twitched with excitement. She couldn't wait for the bell to ring and announce the beginning of the weekend. She was anxious to help take care of her mom and to play in the park with her friends. She couldn't wait to show her friends the pink toy car she got for her birthday. They would build roads in the sandbox at the park and she would share her new toy with her friends.

Can you find the ways in the story that Lucy Mouse used the Fruit of the Spirit called Love? Lucy is loving and kind and does nice things for others. Lucy learned in the Bible that the most important commandment is to love God with all her heart and soul and mind, and the second most important commandment is to love others! Can you think of ways that you can use this Fruit of the Spirit this week?

When you become a Christian, God will help you develop ALL the fruits of the Spirit and He gives you the Holy Spirit to help you do your best each day. If you don't know Jesus as your best friend yet, you can just pray the prayer below that Lucy Mouse did, and Jesus will come into your heart and be your best friend too. Jesus loves you very much!
*********************
Dear God, I know I am a sinner. Please forgive me. I believe that Jesus died for me on the cross and that He arose from the grave so that I can live with Him in Heaven someday. I am now trusting Jesus as my Savior. Thank you for loving me and saving me. Amen.
*********************
Galations 5:22-23
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such there is no law.

May God bless these words as I strive to encourage others in their walk with Christ. Please contact me if you would like to request a specific lesson that Lucy Mouse can teach your children or if you would like a coloring page to be sent to match the story!
