A Chosen Name

by Nancy Quinn
4/14/2008 / Devotionals

The debate over choosing a child's name begins long before women lose sight of their feet and have trouble tying their shoes! A name is a crown for your little one; it's something that you will give your baby as part of the lasting legacy that you will leave to your child to carry on. Many parents choose names because of their special meaning, or a name to honor a loved one's memory, or just because it's a beautiful and unique name for the child to grow into.

My husband and I agreed that if we had a girl, we would name her Rachel. And if our baby was a boy, we would name him Matthew. Our son, truly a "gift from God" as his name means, has been exactly that since he made his first appearance and got to wear his sporty little blue cap that the nurses put on him.

Your name has been carefully chosen by your parents. And while you may have gone through a rebellious stage in your teen years like I did that you wished you had a different name, I quickly grew out of that stage and I now try to live up to the name my parents carefully chose for me. Nancy means "grace" and I strive for my Christian walk and life to be full of grace and love for others, and I wouldn't trade my name for anything! It was a gift from my parents, and I also know I was a gift from God for them to raise as a child of God.

If you don't already know your name's meaning, I encourage you to do an internet search and you may be surprised how well your name seems to fit you! And even more than your parents love you and chose your name; your Heavenly Father chose to send Jesus to die on the cross for you because He loves you with an infinite and unconditional love! Are you living up to your name? Is the Lord's favor smiling upon you? Sometimes it's hard to be holy as He is holy; but with God's grace, He holds our hand and will help us to live up to the name our parents chose for us as we carry on the legacy of faith our parents gave us to become men and women of faith.

Proverbs 22:1 "A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favor rather than silver and gold."

I Peter 1:16 "for it is written: "Be holy, because I am holy."

May God bless these words as I strive to encourage others in their walk with Christ. Please contact me if you would like to request a specific lesson that Lucy Mouse can teach your children or if you would like a coloring page to be sent to match the story!
