Lucy Mouse Learns About the Golden Rule, a Children's Story

by Nancy Quinn
4/24/2008 / Short Stories

Lucy Mouse hopped up the basement stairs of the little white church where she lived with her family behind the Christmas ornament box. She stopped and listened. Faint sniffles came from nearby. The sound was coming from behind a little bush near the church. Lucy peeked through the bushes and said "hello?" She wiggled through the bushes to the center to find her friend Moose Mouse wiping his eyes. Moose Mouse had a big name, but was a VERY tiny grey mouse with hair that always stuck straight up from his head. Lucy asked Moose if the other mice were making fun of him again. He wiped another tear and nodded. Lucy gave Moose a tissue from her little pink purse and as he wiped his eyes, she promised that she would walk to school with him the next day. Lucy heard her mom calling her for dinner, so she waved goodbye to Moose and scampered back down the stairs.

Lucy Mouse opened her Bible that night before she went to bed. She found a good verse to memorize. Proverbs 11:13 "Those who talk about others tell secrets. But those who can be trusted keep things to themselves." Lucy wanted her friends to always trust her, so she never talked about her friends behind their backs. And whenever her friends talked to her, they knew she would never repeat things to anyone else. Lucy prayed for her family and her friend Moose that night before she went to bed. She closed her eyes and drifted off to sleep dreaming of playing with her friends in the little park next to her church home.

The next morning, she walked to school with Moose. Lucy invited Moose to sit at her table during lunch and they all decided to play tag at recess. After recess, Lucy Mouse noticed Albert the Rat standing in the hallway so she walked on the other side of Moose and started talking to him as they passed by Albert. The end of the day came quickly and Lucy Mouse caught up with Moose as they scampered out the big front doors of the school. They raced through the little park and sat on the church steps and talked about the day. Moose said he had a great day! He was really happy that Albert didn't pick on him all day! Lucy heard her mom calling her, and waved goodbye to Moose.

Lucy munched on cheese crackers as she told her mom about her day. Her mom smiled and said she was proud of Lucy for always following the "Golden Rule". The Golden Rule? Lucy wondered what kind of rule was made of gold! Her mom opened the Bible to Luke 6:31 "Do to others as you want them to do to you." She said we call this the Golden Rule when you treat people the way you would want to be treated yourself. Lucy remembered that day where she didn't talk about any of her friends behind their backs, and when Albert the Rat laughed when she had tripped and dropped her cheese soup at lunch that day, she forgave Albert for laughing at her. Lucy stood up for Moose when one of the kids laughed at his hair, and she had invited Moose to sit with her friends at lunch so he wouldn't have to sit by himself. Lucy smiled and told her mom that she found Gold today! And she would help Moose find gold so he could learn how to make more friends too!

Sometimes it's hard to follow the Golden Rule and be nice when people aren't always nice to you. Proverbs 17:17 "A friend is always loyal." Lucy knows that sometimes her friends will let her down because she knows they aren't perfect and sometimes do things that hurt her feelings. And Lucy hopes her friends forgive her when she lets them down too! Lucy is a loyal friend and always tries to treat people the way she wants to be treated. Do you follow the Golden Rule? You will always have friends if you follow the Golden Rule like Lucy Mouse does. And you can also have a very special Friend named Jesus who wants to be your best friend if you pray the following prayer! God loves you so much He sent Jesus to earth to die on the cross for your sins. Lucy hopes you ask Jesus to be your best friend too and hopes you find Gold just like she did today!

Dear God, I know I am a sinner. Please forgive me. I believe that Jesus died for me on the cross and that He arose from the grave so that I can live with Him in Heaven someday. I am now trusting Jesus as my Savior. Thank you for loving me and saving me. Amen.

May God bless these words as I strive to encourage others in their walk with Christ. Please contact me if you would like to request a specific lesson that Lucy Mouse can teach your children or if you would like a coloring page to be sent to match the story!
