BUS RIDE BLESSINGS

by Suellen Fry
11/08/2006 / Christian Living

As I flew out of the house, only five minutes remaining, I hoped I wouldnt miss the bus. Keeping in stride I moved as fast as my feet would allow. I mustnt miss my appointment. With only a couple of minutes to spare, I had a moment to breathe before I noticed the bright blue bus in the distance.Phew, I thought, Thank God I made it on time.

As I plopped down in my seat I noticed a couple of friendly faces. There was an older black woman I have seen before. She glanced my way and gave me a friendly nod. Then I noticed the man who always sported a large cross around his neck. I have had many pleasant conversations with him. He always asks about my little boy with a tender smile upon his face, In fact, one day last year he even prayed over my little one. We continued into conversation which always leads to the Lord. Which is no surprise, since he is a holy man of God and I myself, a Christian soldier. The elderly gentleman who was sitting across from me bleeped in. Even the bus driver had a few words of inspirational wisdom.

I had arrived to my appointment in time and bid the bus driver a good day.

Today was a good day above and beyond, for today I learned a new lesson as a Christian.

As I hopped on the bus for my return home, I noticed how crowded the bus was today. I looked around at all the faces of my brothers and sisters. There was the crowd from the mental health center. There were those who were faced with physical disabilities and had no choice but to ride the city bus, and those who had their own reasons unbeknownst to me. My thoughts took me back.

Two years ago when my car was stolen I began my adventure with riding the city bus.
I can remember feeling a bit jilted and sorry for myself. It had been years since I even set foot on such a bus. I had always had a car of my own. Now, here I was on the city bus. Wasnt I too good for this? All the folks I had encountered on the bus seemed to be a bit out of sorts, misfits in their own right. But I myself was well bred, and I had a college education.

Now here I was again without a car and riding the bus. However, this time seemed to be a bit different. I wasnt feeling sorry for myself. These past few months in riding the bus seemed to be quite a humbling experience. I rather looked forward to my occasional rides. There were familiar faces and always a lesson to be learned. Everyone I came in contact with had something special to say. It was as though the Lord was speaking through each and every one of them. As I glanced up and down the aisles taking everything in, a calming peace overwhelmed me. I saw some friendly faces and nodded hello. I noticed the black elderly woman who was sitting up front. She seemed to glow through the wisdom lines that marked her years on this earth. Then there was my friend who was parallelized from the waist down, She had been in a car accident some years ago. She always had a smile on her face. Today for some particular reason she looked radiant. There were others who had an apparent mental disability. Some simply uttered in a broken jargon, while others stared out of the window with a blank expression.

It was then that I felt blessed. I felt blessed for the opportunity to ride the city bus. I felt honored to have come across the paths of such special people, for it was being among them that I was truly blessed. Then I thought to myself, they weren't misfits at all. Maybe it was me that was the misfit.

I sat back in my seat and smiled to myself. Here we were, all of Gods children, taking our seats on the bus. Each of us so different, yet, so much alike. Each of us having had to bare our own cross at some point in our lives. Yet, The Lord loved each and every one of us just the same, and chose no favorite. "Weren't we all Gods children, I thought.Yep, that was it. That was my lesson for the day! All of us on the bus had the same loving father! The same father, who cared for wounded spirits, also cared for wounded hearts and wounded minds.

Next stop Central Station, called the bus driver. My ride was over. Orwas it?
Yes, today was a good day.

And he took them up in his arms, put His hands upon them, and blessed them.
