Saturday Morning Patients: Being a Servant of Christ

by Nancy Quinn
5/02/2008 / Devotionals

I gingerly pulled out the papers from the small metal cage. Working in my dad's veterinary office on a Saturday included cleaning the cages after each furry patient got to go home with their owner. With the garbage can close by, I worked quickly and learned to hold my breath. Sanitizing came next, which was a welcome breath of fresh, or at the very least, sanitary air. In the neighboring cages, I reassured a small gray cat with a splint on his leg and a Black Labrador sporting a fashionable cone-shaped collar that their owners would come soon too. With bowls of fresh water and scratches behind their ears, I promised to come back and visit with them again later.

The phone began to ring by 8:30 a.m., and making appointments and taking messages made this a usual bustling Saturday. After each patient left, I wiped down the silver table and then sprayed to prepare it for our next patient, putting the utensils into the depths of the sanitizing machine.

I've grown up now, but I still work in an office in a service career. Serving others is something that is second nature to me and the verses in the Bible about becoming a servant were never a challenge to me. Now guarding my tongue has been a challenge, but that is a topic for another devotional!

Are you a servant? Whatever ministry or career level you are currently blessed with in your life right now, I encourage you to strive to remain a humble servant of Christ. EVERY job in the kingdom of God is important and we are all called to serve others in love!

Mark 9:35 "He sat down, called the twelve disciples over to him, and said, "Whoever wants to be first must take last place and be the servant of everyone else."

Luke 22:27 "For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves."

Galations 5:13 "You, my brothers, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the sinful nature; rather, serve one another in love."

I Peter 4:11 "If anyone speaks, he should do it as one speaking the very words of God. If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen."

May God bless these words as I strive to encourage others in their walk with Christ. Please contact me if you would like to request a specific lesson that Lucy Mouse can teach your children or if you would like a coloring page to be sent to match the story!
