Do we need scriptural knowledge

by Mark Heatherly
5/18/2008 / Christian Living

Doctrine & theology seem to be the most important thing to people today, but do you not realize that knowledge (which includes all of these things) has only two basic purposes. The main and essential one is to lead you to Christ & Him in you as your new life & way of living. The second is for renewing your mind to bring it into conformity with the reality or truth of God.

To focus on much learning & especially if to merely formulate theology & doctrines is to miss the point & function of the word all together. You surely know that the word is alive, for it is living & active. The word is God in the person of Jesus Christ. This is to be our desire & goal & end all for knowledge will one day be done away with. And why is this ? Because it will have served it's purpose in leading men to Christ.

In regard to scriptural knowledge, let's look at one point for an example.
Salvation...what does this mean ? Most all true believers would simply reply "Deliverance from the eternal consequence of sin & damnation". I would protest however to this overly simplistic answer, as how can one be satisfied so as to simply say this?

Yes, Praise the lord this is true, but it is incomplete at best. Salvation is the very impartation of God's divine life into our being. Are we not now the temple of God ? It is not therefore, just simply forgiveness & pardon but the impartation of newness of life which is all together superior to the aspect of pardon.

Who cares about doctrines if it does not achieve it's purpose which is to lead men to Christ... first for pardon, then for deliverance from the self, the old man, the world system, & the sin nature & then for the newness of life imparted to us through Christ in our spirit as the life-giving Spirit.

I wonder, do you know where Christ is ? If you are a believer, then He is to be found within your very person. He resides in your spirit waiting for you to KNOW Him. He does not care that you know scriptures. He only cares that you know Him.

If you studied the very word "knowledge" you would see that there are two basic forms of knowledge. One is to know of or about something and one is to know by experience. It is one thing to say "I know of the President" & another all together, to be able to say " I know the President". The latter involves your having a literal experience with the person while the other does not. I do not know about you but I much prefer the latter with our Lord.

Again, I cannot over emphasize the point, Jesus is a real person & He is in your person . The word, or the scriptures, are there in a living way to lead you into the experience of His existence within your spirit. If you do not know this you have missed the whole point of the scriptures, just as the religious leaders in Jesus' day. They knew very well the scriptures, & yet did not recognize Him as the living Rhema though He stood right in front of them & spoke to them.

One other thing concerning knowledge. As to scriptural knowledge, there is what you can apprehend through the mind's mere cognitive abilities, which is the focus of the majority, & then there's the revelation knowledge which comes to those who position themselves before God IN Christ. To be in Christ is not a simple term, but if you care to do so, you can read my writing on "Abiding" to know what I mean. This is the way to knowing or experiencing God in spirit & truth.

I pray God may give to you a spirit of revelation & wisdom so that you may know of the things & the eternal life of which I speak.

I make my writings available to all, but I would very much like to hear from those who have questions or comments or are built up & enriched & also from those who wish to use my writings for reprint.
