Flower Petals of Kindness

by Nancy Quinn
6/08/2008 / Devotionals

Now that summer has arrived and the flowers are again making their appearance after a long winter's sleep, the soft petals of flowers remind me how our lives touch and connect with others. I finally got to pick up my mom from the airport after three canceled flights due to weather last night. The anticipated arrival time in the Pocono's of 5:00 PM eventually ended at a midnight arrival time. News of the canceled flight raised groans and tension from the crowd, and she joined the other concerned travelers in a three-block long line at the O'Hare International Airport in Chicago to await the ticket counter's skilled juggling talents.

A fellow traveler trying to get to her destination that day to attend her future daughter-in-law's wedding shower chatted with my mom and promised to stay with her through the stress of the unknown. She offered to call me for my mom to let me know what was going on since my mom couldn't hear very well on her cell phone due to the dull roars filling the cavernous room of the waiting travelers. Chris, my mom's new friend sent from God, assured me that my mom was ok and she would call again and let me know updates as soon as they received them. The second potential flight that would be going to Pennsylvania also dashed our hopes as it soon canceled as well due to the weather. Prayers from Iowa where my sister was awaiting her safe arrival, the Pocono's and from inside the airport in Chicago floated up to heaven and the Lord answered. The third and final flight going to Pennsylvania had ten remaining seats and my mom was on the last seat. I look forward to seeing Chris in heaven one day so I can give her a big hug for seeing my mom's stress and promising to stay with her and help her reach her destination, despite her own concerns for her travel plans.

The kindness of Chris that evening reminds me of flower petals. With Christ as the center, we all stay connected to Him and our lives touch, sometimes even just briefly and softly like the petals of a flower, as we reach out and show kindness and love to others. It's no surprise that the woman who helped my mom with such kindness was named Chris. Her name, like her actions, is very close to Christ.

John 13:34-35 "Let me give you a new command: Love one another. In the same way I loved you, you love one another. This is how everyone will recognize that you are my discipleswhen they see the love you have for each other."

May God bless these words as I strive to encourage others in their walk with Christ. Please contact me if you would like to request a specific lesson that Lucy Mouse can teach your children or if you would like a coloring page to be sent to match the story!
